x264 MKV Conversion

I recorded a few things on TV like yesterday's Cal vs Tennessee game. I also have last year's Oregon game sitting on my HD. The Oregon game for example weighs in at a hefty 17.2 GB. I would like to convert these to MKV format like the guys do when they rip TV shows to MKV using x264 encoding....

I'm trying out AutoMKV out right now but I would like to decrease the framerate from 60fps so that quality won't sustain a huge hit with the compression. Any tips for what I should do? I'm pretty newb in this area.
