Have been reading a lot of your discussions on the upcoming new cpu from AMD and was wondering if anybody had any thoughts on it insofar as performance as a gaming server. Sounds like it is going to be a " up and coming thing". Next build I want to be able to host games and if it can do that and provide the multitasking it is meant to do it would be a very sound investment. Maybe I am way off base here, I am sure someone will let me know.

Sounds like an awful lot of money to throw at a gaming server? I was under the impression that cpu performance wasnt the leading bottleneck of game servers, I thought it was more memory size/speed and internet latency? Maybe you should more consider the other things you will use the computer for?

Understandable...but my way of thinking is that the cpu, if it could adequately perform as a gaming server, also double up for video and audio work as well in the background. Trying to get the most out of the investment. In my situation, it is fact that I am going to make another build (based on AGP video card) and its either going to be a san diego or this...I don't mind spending another $300 if the performance is there with the x2. I am hoping that it can run the server and do various tasks when called upon...

is 1 gig of ram gonna be sufficent? Right now I am under the impression it is...

thanks

full ack rgreen. for a game server a nforce2 system with 2500+ and 1024mb is just fine. Bottleneck is imo the internet/ Lan performance.

Depends on what you want to run on the server.
Multiple games means you want a better CPU.

Some games are very CPU intensive (UT2004, especially with vehicles being on example). It all depends on what game and the player counts you are looking at. Also, whether you want to run multiple games on one server.

Dual CPUs are nice in a gaming server as they help make sure your server doesn't have any performance hiccups. You really don't need that much CPU power for a gaming server though. Even the aging Athlon MP platform would have plenty of horsepower for such a task and your bottleneck would more likely be the network. How many people are you planning on hosting on this server and for what games?

I would hope to handle at least 12 to 16 (and that may be to many). Yes, I agree, my cable connection will probably be the bottleneck. Right now I would say that HALO would be the only game to host. I think having more than 1 on a server would create problems.

Just for reference, 16 player UT2004 or BFV runs just fine on my AthlonXP (TbredB) @ 2000 Mhz with 512MB PC2100.

12-16 player for most multiplayer games is not going to be a problem on an X2 AT ALL.

Hey councilman...thanks for info... what type of connection you have?

I can't do that over my 1500/384 DSL, I use it when I have a 'few' people over for some drunken gaming fun... I mean I wired my house with 16 ports of gigabit... gotta put it to use, you know (much to my fiance's chagrin).

Most I do with my DSL connection is host a TS server. static IPs are cool! (but expensive)
