I happen to have a copy of x2 on hand and started playing, but am wondering if I should just fork over the $20 and get x3.

I'm interested in the commerce, trading, etc.

I could have sworn I saw X3 on Amazon for $9.99 with free super saver.

If not, it's $19.99.

X3 is massive... but takes massive amounts of time. XTM (X-tended Mod) for X3 expands it even further...

It's basically the same game but with some add-ons, better graphics, and it runs smoother for some reason. X2 would always run in the teens-20's in terms of frames for me, but X3 runs at 30-40.

The new X-game(X3: Terran Conflict) comes out within a month and will probably be between $30-$40(It's a standalone expansion to X3: Reunion). I would hold off for that as it has a vastly improved UI, better Wing management, and a lot more content.

x3 is great but I think you would all "x-ed out" if you waited till you got bored with X2 before moving on to x3.

My problem with x3 is that I found out it has a cool scripting language (well same with x2 for that matter) and as a software programmer I had to check it out. Big mistake. All I did from then on was to boot the game just to write some code. I actually didn't want to play it, just wanted to program on it. lol...

and once I got frustrated i couldnt get it to do some complicated things I had envisioned I didnt play again.

I stopped playing because it was just taking me too long to build up an empire full of destroyers and sprawling factory complexes - the game takes a lot of dedication.

I've bought very few things on steam, but I did get these 2 when they were like $15 for both. I've tried loaded the X2 tutorial a few times, but something seems to bug when I play it.

X2 actually has pretty terrible tutorials - they barely tell you what to do. They're fun scenarios once you know how the game works, though.

If you're a fan of the X series, X3 is worth a buy. Space combat is improved over X2 - though, that ain't saying much. And you do have some new economic options thanks to complexes and the player headquarters.
It still has the "You're the CEO of a major interstellar corporation, but you have to run everything through the HUD on your spaceship instead of a UI designed for that." fundamental design flaw though. And Terran Conflict will as well.
The economy is well done and all, it's just that asking you to run your company from the GPS in your space chevy ain't a graceful way to make the player's life easy.

I always wanted to be able to go into a first-person perspective and enter my stations to walk around - ie getting missions from people rather than just flying from station to station and looking at the bulletin boards. Sitting in my cockpit can just get so lonely...

I had totally missed this franchise until last year, when gogamer had X3 on sale for less than $5. Its name 'X' must not have grabbed my eye for some reason.
