X2 or system refresh

So when Socket 939 X2 prices were slashed to $150 I thought I'd upgrade. Then, since I wasn't in a hurry, I thought I would wait until they fell to $125ish. Now that they've RISEN to $180 I'm less inclined to spend the cash.

So I decided to check out what a HW refresh would cost me, using the almighty Anandtech guide.

Well slap me and call me Sally, I can get the low mid-range AM2 system for $600, $500 if I only get 1GB of RAM.

Now I'm a LOT less inclined to spend $200 on a dead socket. And I'm not even factoring how much I'd get for my old Video Card, 1GB DDR RAM, mobo and processor.

Does that seem right?

You can still get some good deals on X2s. You just gotta look. Since the 1MB cache are being phased out, there is going to be shortage soon. I got my 4800+ last week and I'm very happy. Wait until RAM prices come down. There're starting already at a few sites, so wait for the flood.

It's now or never..b/c they are still good and some vendors have decent prices on them. And then later you'll be forced to upgrade at full price.

i just bought a 4800+. it should arrive by wednesday. i didn't want to do a full system upgrade and wanted to extend the life of my current system. the prices of the 4800+ have shot up a little on newegg. i jumped on it before it got too expensive. 299 is still better than $1000, which is what it used to cost a year ago. so i think i got a good deal:)
