X2 Heatsink/Fans.

Ok, I have seen a handful of different opinions on this here and on other message boards.

Does anyone know what kind of HS/F assembley comes with each type of s939 X2 processor?

3800+
4200+
4400+ (110W)
4400+ (89W)
4800+

some people have told me that everything from 4400+ on up has the fx style heatpipe HS/F, while others have said that only the 1MB L2 (toledo) chips come with the heatpipes. Other people have said that they all come with the standard A64 HS/F.

What is the answer?

This was asked a while back, but I can't find it... Anyway, the general concensus is that they all come with the standard A64 HS/F, but some people get lucky and recieve the heatpiped HS/F. It's kind of a wildcard deal - don't expect to get a heatpiped HS/F.

Just my two cents...

My S939 3800+ X2 did not come with the heatpipe heatsink. Neither did my AM2 3800+ X2. Not sure about higher, but I think they have the heatpipe ones.

thanks for the responses everyone.

I have looked over at the AMD forums, and it appears that it is sort of a crapshoot. some X2s (typically the older ones) came with heatpipes and some didn't.

BUT there have been reports of AMD sending heatpipe coolers to anyone who bought an X2 and received the stock HS/F. all it takes is a photo of the heatsink and proof of purchase. don't know if that is for real or not, but it may be worth a try...

I have heard that only the Toledo cores (1MB L2 cache per core) are coming with the heatpipe heatsinks. Whether that's true or not, I'm not really sure. I do know that all Opterons come with a heatpipe, though.

Well, my 89W 4400+ was packaged with the same crappy HSF as a single core CPU:thumbsdown:

Umm No. My 4200+ came with the identical heatsink as my 3200+, Had to buy my own aftermarket heatpipe cooler.

any links to back that up?

Well, I didn't post links because I specifically said "I don't know if this is for real".

But the chain is this.

FrizQuadrata posted this link in another heatpipe thread on this board. it links to an AMD message board on the same topic, and some of the posters there talk about getting the heatpipe cooler from AMD for free...

Ok, to add to the listed information, my brother just received his 4400+. It is a 110W version (ADA4400CDBOX). And it came with the newer, 4 heatpipe cooler...

so maybe the older 110W 4400+ came with heatpipe coolers while the newer 89W processors don't.

Opteron 170 = Heatpipe cooler
4000+ (AM2/X2) = Standard cooler *(Replaced with Zalman CNPS9500)
4200+ (Skt 939) = Standard cooler
4200+ (AM2) = Standard cooler

X2 3800+ came with standard HSF, and was replaced with AC Freezer 64 Pro.

Better than stock HSF and virtually silent at 5v. 🙂

My s939 x2 4400+ came with the heatpipe cooler. I also have an s939 x2 3800+, bought from the same store a few weeks later, and that came with the standard cooler (no heatpipes).

I just received my 939 X2 4400+ and it came with the heatpipe cooler. I will be receiving a Zalman 9500 by Tuesday from the egg so the stock hsf issue is moot to me. The stock heatpipe cooler looks fantastic for stock.
