Thanks guys, I have always tried to go with the most power/performance that I can get.

The 3800+ x2 is more than fast enough for my needs right now, (in fact I am using my C2D 1.5 GHz tablet more right now)but come September and school, I am going to desperately want to upgrade as I have a pretty intense maya course coming my way, perhaps I will wait a bit and see what happens this summer. I don't see much on the roadmaps though... care to comment?

Having just spent $700 bucks on computer stuff (new monitor, 7200 rpm drive for my tablet and some little stuff) and finding out my summer job boss work fucked up and I won't be paid for another 3 weeks has left me not wanting to spend any monies until I do.

So with all that, 3800x2 CPU, AM2+ (95W) MOBO and 2 GB DDR2-800, and a budget of lets say $500 what would you do, upgrade in about a month, or wait until end of august? And what would you upgrade to?

I would personaly wait for the prices to drop, try get buyers for your stuff, and sell it to raise more funds, and then you can buy like the E8500 or whatever tickles your fancy, seeing how there was a thread for the prices of Intel dropping in a few months or so, so i would hold onto that, otherwise it will drop inevitabely, so just hang on till August in my opinion, and you will be able to get the best bang for your buck

It's hard to imagine more worthless feedback than that.

The OP asked for what to upgrade his x2 3800+ to.. on his existing platform.. You're telling him to switch to Intel? The guy wants a quick upgrade and you're telling him to build a new computer.

If I ask what American-made car to buy, are you gonna tell me to switch to foreign?

He's been thread crapping in a lot of the AMD related discussions. He plays COD4 with an 8600GTS but blames his processor for the sub-par performance.

honestly since you have such a limited budget, i would also recomend the 9850BE edition and getting an upgraded sink to keep it cool. The 9850BE shouldnt be that much more then the 9600. The 9850 also have the erata fix, so its a overall better chip.

Unless your an avid overclocker, i have to agree in saying you wont see much of a performance difference.

However if you are an avid overclocker, Kentsfield naturally have a clock per clock advantage. Also i have yet to see a kentsfield not do 3.2ghz 8x400 fsb with a good board psu and ram combo. <--- doesnt need to get expensive, but definitely more then 250.

Also becareful about the 9850BE's. Theres only a few boards which dont have issues with it. Do some research, but tony even said he was disapointed at the limited boards they could be unlocked with.

Isn't there an Intel price cut coming up?
