I tried posting this in the SFF/notebook section but I didnt have any luck. I am not that technical and I could really use some advice before I make the investment, thanks everyone!

Hey everyone, ive been a long time visitor but this is my first time posting! Anyway I am putting together a shuttle sn27p. Primarily I want it to a portable gaming machine (I am in a dorm room so I went for the sn27p because I was able to get it cheap from a guy I know.) I want it to rip on the current games and be ready for games like Crysis and Quake Wars.

I have decided to go with an EVGA 8800gts (i know many will say it wont fit but it does haha)

Here is my main question...I have been debating between the 4800+ and the 5600+

I have been told to go with the 4800+ because of price and power usage..however, looking at the benchmarks...the 5600+ seems alot more future proof.

Let me know what you guys think! thanks

A better choice would be Core 2 Duo, as they have a lower peak power load, although the AMD's have a lower idle and almost idle wattage.

an overclocked E4300 is faster than an OC'd X2

but if I had to get an X2, I'd get the 4800 and OC it or run it stock, doesn't matter

hey guys thanks for the help! Since I already have the shuttle sn27p I am pretty much stuck with AM2...Unless I sell the the sn27p and get a core 2 duo SFF. So you guys think it I would be better off with the 4800+ ? Again I want something that is going to last me a while and is going to run well on upcoming games. Any suggestions?

Do you think the SN27P will be able to run a quad-core chip? (In other words with they still be AM2?)

Im sorry I sound like such a noob haha...I know how to put the computer together but my technical knowledge ends there. Thanks again for your help.

Yeah I heard with a bios update you would be able to run quad core on am2 mobos. There would be am2+ boards, they would be able to do some fancy tweaking with cpu settings, but the standard am2 will run it just fine.

I'd go for the 4800+ and overclock it to at least 2.7 Ghz. There is no garauntee that a 3600+ will make it that high - the most I was able to do was 2.4 Ghz on the only 3600+ that I've purchased.

if you want to have a gaming rig for the next 2 or so years i would just buy a X2 3600 like someone else said here before, overclock it to 2.6-2.8 and when Fenom comes out just upgrade the cpu.

Why waste $130 or plus when you can spend around $65 and have about the same performance with a nice oc?

2 years... last you for a few months before you wish you've just gotten an intel instead.

come to think of it. don't go AMD's route. save yourself the time and money. just don't upgrade at all 'till you have the money for something more worthwhile, get an Asus 210USD mobo and hit up DDR800 and a core2 E6350 4mb.

I would love to get a core 2 duo but because I already have the sn27p I am stuck with AM2.

Not sure if I want to OC considering cooling in a shuttle is pretty crappy...on top of the fact that I will be running a 8800gts.

How much do you guys think Phenom will be when it releases?

Funny thing my two computers are a C2D e6600 (oc'ed to 3200) and a x2-4800+ oc'ed to 2700ish.

Either is fine -- both do anything I throw at them and I have yet to find something the x2-4800+ cannot handle... IF...if the video card(s) are up to the task. Since you are going for an 8800GTS... that will not be an issue.

Yes you could get a lower end x2... no doubt it will oc to say at least 2400mhz which would be a stock x2-4800+ or thereabouts... but if you don?t mind paying the extra $$ to get the 4800+ or higher why not.

Honestly the difference in cost of those chips or anything AMD pretty much offers is not huge. It?s not like when I bought my e6600 that I paid $379.00 (Cad) and if I wanted the X6800 I would have had to shell out well over $1200. The difference there is absolutely retarded. Doing a jump like that is a waste when easily I knew the e6600 could OC over a stock X6800 and so the concept of getting a ?lower? end CPU to run faster than the top end CPU makes sense. Also it will do that "probably" with less issues or problems and what ifs than the lower e6300 or e6400 for $100 more which at that time for we was worth the money.

However when the differences in price of 2 or 3 chips you have in mind is like $30 or $60 or $90$? that?s NOTHING for a bump in speed for a CPU. It?s a gift! Get the most you can get and are willing to pay keeping in mind the threshold of when and if it does get stupid expensive for little gain.

sigh stupid overclockers and their bias towards C2D, yes it's faster clock for clock, but right now you can buy a AMD chip for the same price as any C2D that is equally fast as the AMD. Since he has am2, he HAS to get AMD, and theres nothing wrong with that. I'd say get a cheap 70$ x2 3600 or x2 3800, OC it MILDY, even on stock cooling, in a shuttle, it should be okay.

Then you can upgrade when phenom/agena comes out and live happily ever after. Happy gaming too :p

Agreed. The X2-3600+ runs very cool unless you overvolt it heavily. You should be able to hit around 2.6-2.7 ghz on stock vcore with stock cooling.

I did 2.5 with an X2 3800 939 (not AM2) with no volt tweaks at all. I wasn't a build for me, and I've had no stability complaints. No complaints at all for that matter.

But I can say the same thing about recent C2D builds.
