Hi,

i just built my new pc, its running an x2 4400+, an asus a8n sli premium and a gigabyte 7800gtx. Im using the stock cooler, because it looks farely capable anyway, and im juts wondering if my temps are ok?

With CNQ on it idles at 32 degrees with the stock cooler at 835 rpm.

Should i use CNQ? I plan on using this pc for everything: gaiming, media centre (mediaportal), and for graphics work.

Yesterday i ran two instances of prime 95 for 16 hours. The temperature was 48 degrees with the stock fan running at about 1800rpm (im using the Asus Q-FAN thing).

Are these temps ok? Especially the 48 degrees at load. Would it be better if i got the cpu to run a bit cooler?

Cheers, INM8

Actually, that's a very good temp. My 4200+ gave 36 idle, 48 load with stock HSF without Q-fan, but it's down to 35 idle, 44 load with the Zalman 7700 AlCu at 1500 RPM. Then again I can't get my Cool'n'Quiet to work for some reason. Could you tell me how you got yours working?

EDIT:

It's probably a good idea to use C'Q. It will save you on your power bill, reduce wear on the chip if that's an issue (I've never heard of a chip fail from normal use like this). If you want to OC and use C'Q at the same time, then OC from the Mobo BIOS settings and not the AI booster.

Ahh, well thats great then, because my pc is just about dead quiet from 1 meter away.

Here is how i got my CNQ working:

1. First of all, i downloaded the latest AMD Processor drivers from amd.com for windows xp. (The CNQ drivers are including in this EXE.

Heres the link: (for WIN XP)
http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/utilities/amdcpu.exe

2. After that was installed i rebooted my pc and entered the bios. Under the CPU setup bit, where you can set the HT and VCORE there is an option to enable CNQ.

3. Heres the step that i forgot first time i tried. After the CNQ has been enabled in the bios, the windows power scheme needs to be set on "minimal power management"

To do that, you just go to control panel, and then click on power options.

4.If you want to see evidence on this working install the Asus Cool N Quiet utility which shows you the current CPU clock speed, and the vcore in real-time.

I hope this helps :)

Ok just a little addition for people like me running WIndows XP-64, if you want the right program the one INM8 shows isn't quite it--you need to change the 'amdcpu' to 'amdcpu64'.

Alright, so aside from not having the CPU driver installed I had everything else right, and I was able to find the right driver simply by making the above change, thank you INM8!

Yeah, I don't think those temps are bad at all. Mine idles around 36c and ramps up to 45c or so under load. But I think a lot of that has to do with how hot the GPU is getting. Waiting on an NV Silencer 5 from Newegg to address that issue.

Thanks for the responses :) Do any of you think its viable to move off the stock cooler, and go for something like the xp-120? Obviously noise isnt a problem, even with the amd x2 stock cooler, because with QFAN it is dead quiet, even when both cores are at 48 degrees and they've been running Prime 85 for 15+ hours. Im just wondering how much cooler the xp-120 would have my cpu's running. In not too long, i will probably want to O/C my 4400+ to atleast 4800+ speeds and i dont know if the stock cooler would still hold up whilst remaining relativly quiet.

Does anyone have the xp 120 on the A8N Premium board? I need something that will keep the heatpipe setup on that relativly kool, which has limited my choice of well performing, quiet heatsink + fan setups. Judging from the look of it, if i had it hanging over the MOSFETS instead of the ram, it would cool the radiator/heatpipe setup quite well. However, i have heard of people having problems with the xp 90 on this board.

This http://www.pccasegear.com/prod2587.htm, SilenX 120mm Fan is probably the one id go for if i did get the xp-120, because it is rated at 14dba.

The gigabyte gpower also looks quite similar, and is also cheaper for me to purchase, but iv heard its performance is not as good.

Then again, i may be just fine with the stock cooler :)

Honestly I purchased a XP-90 for my 4400+, when I got the CPU I was disapointed that I had purchased the XP-90. That is by far the best stock cooler I have ever seen. When thinking about it more, i got Tt Silent CAT for the 90 and in the end is better idea for the quieter computer I was building. At load I get about 53-54 but thats also in a room that right now is getting up 90-95F.
