new build with the ADV 89W 4400+

Idling at 36-37C loading around 50C at stock speeds and voltages. haven't tried any overclocking yet.

I am using the AMD stock cooler with 4 heatpipes (ie the FX cooler).

ambient temp about 25C

Case is a full tower with decent airflow, but there are lots of other components in there (4 hard drives, 7800 GTX).

I know those temps are perfectly safe, but i was expecting to run a bit cooler with the heatpipe cooler. this is my first dual-core build, so i just wanted to check with other 4400+ owners and see what their numbers look like.

Looks about right.

You're going to need aftermarket cooling if you want to do any real overclocking.

not interested in any serious OC'ing.

i was just hoping to get up to somewhere between 2.4 and 2.6

my initial research suggested that the better stock cooler from AMD would be sufficient for this, but if I am loading at 50C at stock temps, maybe i will need to buy an aftermarket sink to reach 2.5...

There's plenty of decent aftermarket solutions that are in the $20 - $30 price range. They'll all do better than the stock AMD unit.

The AMD heatpipe really is a good midrange cooler, and those temps are perfectly fine.

For $20, you could get a Freezer64 Pro, but I doubt it would give you more than 2 or 3C (max) drop in load temps. My X2 4200+ at 2.6Ghz on 1.52 loads up to 55-56C when dual priming....and that's with 2x120mm intake fans plus a 120mm exhaust fan.

wow- my case cooling sucks, and I only gained 3 degrees celcius going from stock 2ghz to 2.7 on my X2 3800+. But in all fairness my idling speeds went from roughly 45-48*, load from 54 to 60.... and thats the reported temps, speedfan told a tale of demons much worse in the core temps..... lets not go there

Ok, one more question.

I just got speedfan up and running on this new system, and everything looks good except that the SMBus is reporting temps of 125C. I have never used speedfan before, is this a faulty reading? something to worry about? normal?

a good case ventilation will drop the temp by 5-10c. have an 80mm fan installed on the side door and let it blow room air onto the cpu HSF, you will see a big diference (specially w/ heatpipe system depends so much on ambient temp to operate properly).

He's right, just don't have it blowing directly down onto the cpu's fan. Put it in front of it (closer to the front of the case). Also, make sure you have no less than one other 80mm intake fan, and one 80mm exhaust fan, minimum.
