i'm trying to think over what i want, X2 4200+ or Opteron 165

things i'll be doing (most likely will be doing those all at once during summer/vacation time)

hardcore gaming (cs:s, bf2. cod2 mainly)
watch movies/tv while i'm burning/recording movies/tv
perhaps set up irc/vent for friends if they want it (or other things that doesn't require a real server)

anyways, i can't make my mind up and i been googling a comparison b/w those two and haven't found anything, mainly X2 3800+ vs Opteron 165

if you can help me out, i'd appreciate it

and yes, i may overclock when i need to

Please seach the forums. Discussions like this have been covered daily. IMO I would go with a 165 or 170 if you will be overclocking. 165 if you have a really good board, as the board will likely limit your overclock because it only has a 9x multiplier. It also depends on hte price.

You should probably get a 165, the JetWay 939GT4-SLI-G, which is an amazing overclocker for only $99 at Newegg, and get the 1 gb of g.skill pc4400.

The question should be the Opty vs X2 3800+ not X2 4200+,basically the three
overclock the same so it's better to get the Opty because of the larger cache.

well you wont be increasing by much. What is your current overclock and board? Will you be using it. I dont beleive ram is quite that important unlike many here do. It gives you more flexibility but not that much bang for the buck.

Opteron 165 @ 321 x 9 = 2889 mhz
WOWWW, very nice - i've never OC it

how would you say the ASUS A8N-E compares to your DFI, i need a mediocre board that OC good and i read this one isn't bad

i will OC this Opteron 165 to 2.4 tho

I havent had much experience with ASUS boards so I cant comment on it. My DFI is great and i have seen many who have had better results than I have. Im limited by my motherboard at this point though. I cant seem to get it over 321 but thats nothing to complain about.

Why are you only going for 2.4? You should be able to get that from your 4200.
