X2 3800+ Too hot? 57C Load

Well, on most cold days, it runs at a 35C idle and load at around 51C (load taken with two instances of prime95). Yesterday was pretty hot and the idle temperature went all the way to around 43C and load at 57C.

I touched the heatsink as close as possible to the cpu and my it was barely hot (only feel a LITTLE sting after around 5 seconds). Temperature are detected with speedfan. When the cpu is at 51C, I can leave my hand on it for as long as I want and it won't burn.

My question is: can my temperature sensor be wrong since I am using a Zalman 9500 HSF, which is supposedly really good, also have an Antech Sonata II case with an intake and exhaust fan.


Btw, it's overclocked to 2.64Ghz at 1.45V

can't imagine your temp sensor just suddenly jumped 6C for no reason...something else going on here...

possible problems:

too much AS5/improper application
poor case ventilation
cat hair, misc dust/debris/etc. clogging up Zalman

that seems too hot even for X2 on that cooler

my Venice idle/load are 21-23/34-36C ranges, @1.55v 2700mhz for comparison's sake on TTBigTyphoon with AS5

it didn't actually "jump" up....yesterday was fairly hot (around 5C) hotter. Today, the temperatures are back at 35C Idle and 51C Load...what i'm really wondering is, won't a cpu at 57C burn your finger as soon as you touch it (or does it not burn if contact isn't made well)

57C is nowhere near hot enough to burn. 57C=~ 135F...I probably take showers that hot...

scalding is ~165F, iirc, which would be about 75C or so

the heatsink likely wont be 57 as that is the temperature at the cpu. You might want to check the airflow in your case. Open the side and see how much temperatures fall.

my x2 4200 runs at 35 idle to about 47 high I use stock cooler

Sometimes my x-2 idles at 35 on warm days..and can hit 54C ... (this is with my room 85F+ and overclocked only 1.4v and 2.4ghz) I use an AC Freezer 64Pro. Most of the time it sits at 29 and gets up to 45. If I were you, I would just go as high as I can on 1.4V for coolness sake in the summer, and longevity of chip life. Should drop your temps back down to reasonable.

you should get better temps than that, mine runs 35idle and 46C full load, thats with a thermaltake sonic tower with 12cm fan and lots of case air flow, ambient temp 25C. And i'm not even using as5 just some cheap 25% silver paste.

But then again if the sonic tower can run passive with good active cooling it should be much more effective than coolers which need a fan.

the temps at stock if i remember correctly were around 32/33C at idle and 45/46 at load.

I have just reapplied the the thermal compound (size of one grain of rice) and the temps have dropped around 1 or 2 degrees (before the AS5 burn-in)

Did you notice if the contact was good? Analyzing the "imprint" of the paste should be fairly intuitive.

I'm sure I read somewhere that 45C degrees was the maximum temperature someone could hold a hot object for indefinately? So heatsink being slightly too hot to touch could mean it was about 10C cooler than the CPU at 57C - about right IMO, so the heats being displaced - possibly poor ventilation in case then - try improving airflow by tidying wires, maybe changing hard disk arrangement so more air comes through the front, or even mod the case so it has a side fan - adding a fan at the front of Sonata's doesn't help, because the fan is on the inside of the disk assembly - i.e. not at the very front but behind the drives, so not effective at all.

as i said above, i think the airflow is ok, temps on the cpu during load only drops about 1 or 2 degrees when the side case is taken off

Take off the IHS and remount it?

(if you don't want to take off the IHS, just do a remount, and make sure to put AS5 in a thin coat over the ENTIRE IHS. The HS will squish it down/fill in gaps and squeeze out extra. The IHS HELPS heat dissapation when you put AS5 on the whole thing)

what is the temps with the voltage at 1.4 and 1.425 You just may be at the point where the chip starts to run hot. Those stock load numbers are a little high but only a little high. like 2 degrees higher than what I would guess to be average. What is the ambient temperature where the computer is located?

with my luck, i really don't feel comfortable in removing the IHS...

I'm not really sure what the exact temperature for those current voltage, but i remember that every increase of 0.025V increases the load temperature ~1-2 degrees. So, at 1.425, the load temps IIRC, were around 48/49C and at 1.4, they were around 46/47C.

57c is fine on a hot day. My 805 is 69c with the window open, the case open on a COLD day. (stock HSF)

i have already remounted it (with nearly the same temperature but it hasn't burned-in yet), what i did was put a small rice-sized amount in the middle of the cpu and just let the HS spread it out.


On a normal day, the temperature of my room is around 18-20C while a hot day is around 24-27C

alright, i have just re-tested the airflow of the case (by taking off the side) and it seems that with the side of the case off, the load temp of the cpu drops around 3C degrees....I guess i didn't wait long enough for the temps to drop down before. The cables are pretty tidy already.....but even if the cpu manages to drop 2 degrees by improving the air flow.....the temps are still fairly high. Any other suggestions?
