X2 3800+ Stepping

Hi ,

My X2 3800+ Stepping is - LDBHE 0540VPMW

While browsing google for overclocking results for this chip , i noticed a guy with this chip - CPU: AMD A64 X2 4600+ Manchester LDBHE 0540VPMW .

Does that mean my Chip in its most basic form when it was at the fab plant is the same as a X2 4600+ , but is has just been down clocked .

This guy got his 4600+ to 3.0GHz .
 
good chance that they are one in the same.

amd (as well as intel) speed bins chips.... meaning they'll produce a mass amount of chips and then test them at a certain speed... lets say in this case they choose 2.0 ghz on each core.

once they test the chip and sees it can run at 2.0, they'll lock the mult at 10x and sell it as a 3800+.

but that doesn't mean that the chip COULDN'T do more. it just means it was only tested up to that speed.

a lot of times, it has to do with demand as well. for instance, if the 3800+'s were selling like hotcakes, then they'd speed bin chips and then mark them as 3800+'s.

the neat thing is is that there are certain weeks and steppings which had "good" runs.

such as the CABNE 0530 chips. these were originally marked as FX chips but found their way into the opteron line where they were marked as 144's (1.8 ghz with 1 meg L2) but overclocked to 3 ghz easily on air.

but i could be completely wrong. if so please correct me.
