X2 3800+ retail or Opteron 165 OEM for same price ($322)

small oops: it's $329.99 not $322.

is the opteron better/easier to OC? why? is it underclocked?

I know Opterons are server chips and have some architectural difference, like bigger cache. But are they like better made / higher quality control or something?
 
The opteron and X2 are the same silicon basically, (with the exception of a larger cache on the Opteron). However, as the opteron is a server/workstation class processor it is more rigorously tested and validated to the utmost stability. Thus it stands to reason you are getting more reliable silicon in the Opteron, also equating to generally higher OC results.
 
I vote for the X2 3800 since it has a 10x multiplier. The Opteron 165 only has a 9X multiplier. Which means you're basically limited to about 2.7GHz on most quality motherboards.
 
Certain part number opterons wont OC at all. You need to search OCing boards to find out which you want and make sure you purchace the correct model if you go that route.
 
I read that Opterons REQUIRE registered ram. T or F?

If I do NOT OC, is the Opteron still better b/c of the 1mb cache, or is it a wash?

True for 940 pin Opterons, False for 939 Opties.

 
That Oppy 165 looks like a good deal. However, I don't like the "Usually ships in 7-21 days" under the price. At least the 3800 X2 says "In Stock." From what I have read in some other threads here, retailers who don't have the Oppys in stock now probably won't be getting more. Who knows, though? Maybe they'll get some in in the next week or three.
 
At stock speeds, no way is the 165 better than the X2 3800.The extra 200MHz of the 3800 beats an extra 512kb of cache everytime.
