X2 3800+ OC'ed, or X2 4400+ stock ?

I've recently decided not to order the 3700+ San Diego I was originally planning to buy.

I'm now more interested by X2's for specific reasons, of course including multi-tasking.

I like the X2 3800+'s price, that's for sure. But the X2 4400+ has a total of 2 MB of L2 Cache, while the 3800+ has 512 KB x 2, at a stock speed of 200 Mhz lower than the 4400+'s.

Technically, I can buy the X2 4400+ ... but I'll have to wait more for my next GPU and Memory upgrade. And to be honest, I'd prefer saving some money and go with the 3800+.

But the thing is that the 4400+ has that Cache advantage, which I'm not sure about, but I think could help a lot especially in 3D rendering.

Decisions ... decisions.

I'm not really a "fan" of over-clocking, but I know I'll be tempted to do it with the 3800+ if I get that one. To bring it to at least 2.3 to 2.4 Ghz. So that I'd get a "4400+ less the extra Cache for less money".

Any suggestions ? Facts ? Comments ?

And, finally, yes I will also play recent 3-D games on that system once ready.

Well, the 4400+ overclocks too 🙂. So you can get a 4800+ for less money.

Seriously, the consensus seems to be that the 3800+ is the best bang for the buck, and people are getting some nice overclocks with it.

And its so easy to get 4800+ speeds with a 3800. Just get it, and a XP90 or a big typhoon, and you won't regret it. I know....

I just got a 3800+, and am already at 2.55Ghz at 1.4V. I say get the 3800+ and save your money for either a future video upgrade or upgrade to more RAM

I vote for 3800+, too. Use extra for video card instead. 2700 270x10 1.5v double prime95 stable. My chip came from Monarch and is a Toledo core.

The extra cache isn't worth the couple hundred extra you'd have to pay for the chip. Just get the 3800+ and overclock it.

Cache size doesn't help one bit with rendering engines. If that's
your purpose, only clock-speed matters with X2's.
