X2 3800+ 939 on it's way, A64 3500+ hs/fan good enough?

Bought an OEM X2 3800+ to extend the life of my Socket 939 platform a little bit. I'm replacing my A64 3500+ and wondering if the 3800+ will create enough extra hear that it would really require a better heatsink/fan than the one that came with my 3500+

If you arn't planning on any overclocking and your case has good airflow you should be ok, but I'd suggest paying close attention to operating tempetures for the first few days you have it running & if things seem to be getting toasty, drop a few bucks on somthing better.

The X2 3800+ stock heatsink is the same aluminum chunk that came with most of the single core CPUs. Like this one so you should be fine. But why are you using as stock heatsink? 😛 The freezer 64 pro will cool it nicely and it is fairly cheap too.

Fairly cheap != free. 🙂 I already have a heatsink... and I do plan to do some minor overclocking (no voltage increases). Just curious if I should even bother with a retail heatsink from an A64 3500+ or pick up something better (and quieter).

Installed the 3800 with my 3500's heat sink/fan today. Running at 2.5 GHz on 1.375 volts at 55 degrees C. Ran two instances of Prime95 for an hour. Stable enough for me. 😀 Maybe eventually I'll get a better heatsink and push it more... 2.5 GHz is good enough for now though, and 55 degrees C is kinda pushing it, especially with the summer months coming. Idles around 35-36 degrees C.

55c is a little hot but is within operating parameters so you should be ok for now, but I would at least take a look at FS/FT & see if you can get your hands on somthing more effective before summer ... I didn't realize you were going to overclock when I said it was fine to stick with the stock 3500+ HS.

It's staying under 50 with a normal gaming load on it. Only goes over 50 with something like Prime95 making it work hard.
