X2 3800 @ 2.7 ghz or Opteron 146? What processor should I use?

I am currenty running a X2 3800 @ 2.7 ghz

The new 939 Opterons seem to be overclocking like crazy and I should have a Opteron 146 arriving in a couple of days.. Every chip I've seen so far have been hitting over 3 GHz on air.

What processor would you keep? If i sold my X2 3800 to a friend, I would make about 145$ back after the Opteron costs.

So what processor would you keep assuming my Opteron hits atleast 3 ghz?

Toledo X2 3800 @ 2.7 ghz
Opteron 146 @ 3.0 ghz and $145 (The $145 could go into new video card or something)

This rig will be mainly for gaming (Quake 4 =), Maya/3D rendering, Photoshop, and watching movies.

Is dual core really worth it right now?

Until you verify you can hit 3ghz the 3800+ @2.7ghz should beat it in those cadd aaps you listed...2.7ghz is real the 3ghz is a dream you have not realized...so lets deal with reality....

Many of those apps scale above 50% now so you would need a 4ghz single core to compete....straight up fact...In photoshop some filters scale near 100%.....That doesn't even take into account the multitasking ability and general overall feeling on the desktop....

Well everyone seems to agree that I should just keep my X2... Guess I will try to cancel my 146 order..

In games and some some instances the Opteron 146 (if it does reach 3ghtrz) but Duvie hit the nail on the head. Unless you are excusively gaming and already don't have a screaming X2 at 2700 I could see getting the 146 with many confirmed 3ghrtz oveclocks from fellow forumites but since you do I would keep the X2. Of course I am biased with my X2 but ...

Sort of. Just a different core with more cache. There are both single and dual-core opertons.

I still personally believe 3ghz on safe voltage and air cooling is a pipe dream..

As much as I would love it, keep your X2 @ 2.7 hands down!
