I'm by no means a gamer, but I'm trying to "combine" some of my aging system components into a decent rig to run on my HDTV. I'm aware that most games are not bottlenecked by the cpu at this time (correct me if I'm wrong), but I think a single faster core processer would be better then a slower dual core...even if it is only 500Mhz.

Thoughts

Edit: I can push the X2 to 2.4 and the Opty has run at 3Ghz, but I don't want to push my current PSU to it's hilt.

You are correct, but also depends on if it's a quake4/ or newer game, that could really take advantage of 2cores. I'd say counterstrike would run faster on 2.7 ghz :)

Good thought...I'm looking mainly at the new DX10 games, Crysis, HL2, Obliv...etc.

Dual-Core ftw, it will be a smoother overall performance, ESPECIALLY if you have stuff in the background (AV, IM, etc, etc). With a little more volts, and a looser HTT ratio, you should be able to hit 2.4+ on that X2, you have one hell of a good mobo.

I'll have to look into that...first I've heard of a game being multi cpu supported. Thanks!

Quake3 had an SMP patch like ten years ago or something. Now lots of games are MP-aware/optimized. It would be too lengthy to list here, but some googlage will tell you what you need to know. Besides, pretty much *every* upcoming title benefits from 2 or 4 cores.

These games benefit from dual-cores, although I'm sure I'm forgetting quite a few: Doom III (can't remember for sure, but it seems like, since it uses the same engine as Quake 4, which definitely does), Quake 4, F.E.A.R., M$'s Flight Simulator X, Oblivion, Supreme Commander, and Bioshock. All of these, except the last three, have to be updated to be able to support dual-cores.

And these games are supposed to benefit from quad-cores: Crysis, Quake Wars, Alan Wake, and probably quite a few more newer games.

edit: Unreal Tournament 3 is also supposed to benefit from quad-cores, IIRC.

Thanks everyone...look's like it's time to sell the Opty and pick up another X2.
