Would the performance be noticeable? Anyone had a look at the stock cooler, will it cool the thing sufficiently, and not sound like a vacuum cleaner?

read one of the plethora of reviews online. the stock 3870 cooler is supposed almost completely silent. I'll let you know how they compare when my 3870 comes in, however ;)

the 3870 is on par with the 2900xt usually and the 2900xt is quite a bit faster than the x1950xt usually so it should in theory be faster. Edit: i would upgrade only if you find ur x1950xt insufficient. otherwise i would hang on for the nexxt gen cards.

yes, I've found my x1950xt insufficient. I sold it on fs/ft instead of ebay, however. it's a 256mb version, so it's quite a bit slower with all the eye candy turned on than some of the newer and/or 512mb cards. 3870 looks like the perfect upgrade, and it won't be much over $100 after I sell the old card :)
