X1950XT overclocking not going very well

I just got my X1950XT today. It doesn't seem to be too stable in terms of power, because if I move my computer, it turns off. When I'm using it and playing games, it's fine. So I tried auto-overclocking it with CCC and got 650 clock, 1800ish memory. With ATT, I tried the same settings and my video just crashed (nothing showed up). Actaully, the RAM speed on ATT doesn't even go up to 1800. The max is like 1790 or something. I played some games after using CCC to overclock, and I didn't see any artifacting. Max load temp was around 90C, but the fan wasn't on max. People say that the CCC overclocking is pretty sucky though. So why is it working better than CCC?

ATT is a little glitchy as far as OCing goes. My friends X1950Pro works when you are tweaking it's OC on ATT sometimes, but other times his computer restarts, even if the OC is lowered. I'd use ATi Tool.

If you are sticking with the stock fan, I've set my setting in ATI tool to turn the fan up to 68% at 75C and 100% at 78C. I never go above 78C with this setting. I've been told load temps in the 70s are average, not sure if this is true.

Also, I noticed that for my card at stock settings the GPU shows up as 621 MHz instead of the 625 MHz as advertised, though the RAM does show as 1800 MHz.

I also bought a VF900 to use for overclocking and to get the temps down, but there have been reports of the VF900 causing the temps to go up, and I haven't put mine on yet because I'm still trying to determine whether my card is faulty and I don't want to ruin the warrenty. I'm getting some odd artifacts when I force AA in Oblivion, see my recent post on this:

First red flag.

What do you mean by "move [your] computer?" Do you sit there and shake it, pick it up, or just slide it back and forth on your desk?

I just pick up the tower and kinda move it. I tested it while gaming for a while, so I think it should be okay. I'm planning on replacing the PSU within a month or 2 when I can afford it.

If your computer resets when you move it, it makes it sound like you have a loose connection somewhere. I would try to find that and correct it ASAP. What PSU are you currently using? I would be careful otherwise you might end up replacing more than just your PSU in a couple months. :)

I'm using an Xclio 450W (made by Channel Well). I hear some crackling sounds coming from my computer, and I'm thinking it might be my PSU. The +12V rails are still at the same voltage (12.4ish load) as when I had my 6600GT installed, and it doesn't freeze or anything when playing games. I do have the 6-pin PCIe connector connected as well. I think the power cable from the PSU to the outlet might be coming loose, but I dunno.

I think it might be the PSU. Seasonic is worth the price(?), it's been awhile since I looked at prices.

Yeah, I think I'll just leave the clocks low until I can afford a new PSU (probably within a month or too). I'm looking at the Fortron FSP550-80GLC. 550W, 4 +12V rails @ 22 each, 42A combined, 80% efficiency, and only $85.

Use ATi Tray Tools for Drivers Settings, but I have to admit that it's far from being stable enough for OC'ing ATi GPU's. Personally I use ATI Tool 0.25 Beta 14 (Beta 14 has been the most stable so far to me). So I recommend you try ATI Tool for OC'ing, but keep ATT for everything else (except maybe temperatures reporting, which ATI Tool do better as well in my opinion).

I would try to find a way to get a new PSU right now... If your computer catches fire, save the 1950XT first. Your skin will grow back.

no, that crackling sound means u don't have enough overclock...

my trusty xp333 started misbehaving a couple weeks ago and i ran some parts through it with no success so i decided to scrap it... when pulling it apart i found that the (cheap) psu had welded about 4 pins into the main power socket... it killed a cpu and 2 dimms on its way down...

check all your connections real well... replacing all your parts gets expensive...
