X1950XT and 7.2 drivers problem. Windows XP.

So I upgraded to the 7.2 drivers for the huge performance increase they promised. The CCC is causing random errors. When I revert back to the 7.1's it goes away. I have read of others having similar problems but usually the other way around, the 7.2's seem to work better for them. Anyone find a workaround for this or have the same problem as me?!

X1950 Pro here, the 7.2 CCC wont even work on mine. I uninstalled the old 7.1 installation, did a full driver cleaner pro run (with cabcleaner) for both the ATI drivers and the CCC and still when I install the 7.2 CCC it does not come up when I try to launch it (even tried to restart the runtime). I had to use the individual driver for 7.2 and run the 7.1 CCC🙁

Stop using CCC for God's sake !!!

Get ATi Tray Tools and install the display drivers only, or display drivers with WMD drivers, but do NOT touch CCC, is it clear enough ? In how many languages will it have to be told for some of you guys to understand ? CCC stands for Crap Crap Crap, clear ?

I just uninstalled CCC 7.1 and installed the latest nonbeta version of ATI Tray Tools, while I dislike having to use 3rd party software for my hardware, I guess it may be necessary.

I haven't had any problems with th 7.2's and my X1950 Pro...I had heaps of issues with the 6.12's and 7.1's, mainly with the CCC, but the 7.2's work like a champ and gave a nice little boost in performance as well over the 7.1's.

Well CCC doesn't work anymore for me with 7.2 (X1900XT). I'd stick with ATT but it doesn't allow centered timings which I need for a few games that don't support my monitor's native res.

Have you tried 7.2 with the old-style Control Panel?

Hey thanks Dennis for the link, I gave the 7.2's with the old Control Panel a go, no more CCC, which is the best part, it was a bloody resource hog.

I also got a small increase in performance over the 7.2 with the CCC...maybe because of the extra resource not being used up...it added around 100 points to most 3Dmark scores...not much but every bit helps.

the only drawback is the lack of AVIVO...but I don't watch DVD's on my PC much any way...thats what I got a big ass TV for.

Thanks to a post here I have it running smoothly. I simply installed the 7.2 display drivers and wdm, and the 7.1 CCC. I have tried ATI tools etc., but the CCC is familiar and simple to use for me. I got the performance increase and the CCC seems to work fine. Not the best overclock, but it's running at 655 core/945 memory. The fan seems to spin up faster in games like CoD2 but it's not that loud that I can't stand it over the performance increase. I can overclock a bit more, but it's at a comfortable level. Thanks guys!

From my experience the 7.2 drivers for XP still need work. I don't use CCC, but with those drivers I was getting random BSOD during movie playback. And CS Source, would crash to desktop at random also. I went back to the 7.1 and no issues.

unless your running vista I would probably just stick with 7.1 drivers

Apparently so, that link is dead.

Working now

Thank you!

This better than the ATI Tray Tools? Also, this a direct port of the old control panel and did they mess with the driver (no longer WHQL certified)?

nope, it seems to work exactly like the CCC 7.2..only without the bloated piece of crap CCC.

any performance increase you get is no different to when ATI was still Officially using both types of control panels...the standard driver and CP was always a little bit better due to less resources being used up.

My card works great with the new drivers . CCC works great also. Don't listen to people who can't install software correctly.

I had trouble with the first His card I recieved I finely got it to work . Than I noticed that the 512 version was cheaper than the new card I got a little over a month ago 256 version. New egg gave me my $$$back at which time I jumped all over the 512 version . This card is great not 1 problem The fan stays at 40% and I haven't seen a GPU temp above 43c since I installed it. It idles at 32c. This is the coolest running ATI card I have every owned. This is the factory O/C card so I am really impressed.

Do tell the proper method to installing drivers.

I performed the following:
1. Used add/remove programs to uninstall the 7.1 drivers in the following order:
  • AVIVO
  • CCP 7.1
2. Reboot
3. Add/remove programs to uninstall the driver / uninstall utility
4. Reboot into safe mode
5. Ran cab cleaner
6. Used driver cleaner pro to remove remainder of the CCP and ATI drivers
7. Booted to windows (with nic unplugged, clicking cancel on all the prompts to search for drivers)
8. Installed full driver / software package from AMD (7.2)
9. Everything worked but the CCP (service ran, but would never open from either the start > programs or the context menu).

There is definately a problem with the 7.2 drivers, and yes most of us know how to install video card drivers. I went so far as to do a fresh install of Windows, and it resulted in the same problem. ATI and nvidia have been a little lax on their drivers lately heh.
