Hi, first off, my system

- AMD Athlon 64 3700+ Stock (2.2)
- ATi Radeon X800 XL 256MB (Stock)
- 1GB OCZ PC3200 RAM
- MSI K8N Neo4 Motherboard
- WD 120GB HDD

Well I am thinking of buying a new graphics card to play CoH. Basically, I'd like to play at the max settings. My budget is of 250-270 (no more). So yeah I looked on newegg and zipzoomfly and found the X1950XT 256MB, which is supposed to perform a little better than the X1900 XT, at $260. However, I have heard and read that the 256MB won't allow me to play at Ultra textures? I am trying the demo with my 800XL and can run it at 1280x1024 everything on the max settings, except Textures (High) and Shadows (Medium), getting a 25 FPS average on the Performance Test. If I try Ultra textures it will crash after it's done loading ..

So, is 512MB a must to play with the Ultra Textures option? If it is, please help me find a video card which is as good as it or even better at the same price range? 7900GT?GTO?. I can play Doom 3 with ultra, and although it tells me that I need 500MB VRAM it works and I get decent frames per second.

THanks for your time!

u will need 2gb of sys mem, too, whichever card u get... with 1gb it is constantly hitting the disk...

my kid's pc has an oc'd x1800xt 512, and a 2.8ghz a64, and with 1gb of memory it still lags because of only 1gb of mem (a couple 1gb sticks are on the way)... of course this is with everything turned up at 1680x1050...

Ah no. I don't plan on playing at that resolution. I'm thinking of 1280x1024 or even 1600x1200. Obviously EVERYTHING turned on Ultra/Max/Highest.

That's why I'm asking/

Thanks!

Um, well 1600x1200 is actually quite a few more pixels on screen than 1680x1050 so any problem playing on the latter would obviously be moreso on the former (though not incredibly so).

I'm fairly certain that the x1950xt 256 should be fine to play the game at 1600x1200 with all max settings, but the extra memory if you upgraded to 512 would help if you had the money. Either way you'll see a fair improvement.

You will need the 512MB if you want to run the game at those settings.

EDIT: I was able to run max setting with almost the same rig but 2gb of ram. I had the 1900XT 512. You may run into a problem with the 3700 though. Mine couldn't do 4+ multi player games it bogged. So I got a 4800X2 and it fixed the problem.

Yeah I will run it at 1280x1024 as long as I can run it at those settings. Don't think I will play multi player though I'm more interested in the campaign.
