If i'm not mistaken the x1950 xt is based on the x1950 xtx but only has 256 mb of ram.If the x1950 xt features the cooler like the one on x1950 xtx,by all means get it.

It probably depends on the games that you want to play with it. For many games, the X1900XT 256 and the X1900XT 512 were pretty similar. There are some games that require more than 256M of memory for the texture packs. If you play those a bit, then 512 might be better. Otherwise, the faster memory should be slightly better assuming that the quality is the same.
The X1900XT 512 will almost certainly be faster. Most benchmarks indicate that the extra memory makes a more significant difference than the increased memory speed on these cards (about 5-15% as opposed to 2-5%). Although it will also have the louder cooler.
