These are around the same price. Is there an advantage of one over the other in terms of video editing, Mpeg2 creation, DVD authoring, and audio editing? No gaming.

If you tend to use your old computers as linux or myth boxes as I do the Nvidia suppport is better for that purpose.

If you never ever intend to do anything linux related one of the review sites compared purevideo and whatnot and basically said they are about the same. It might have been here or hardocp or ars

If there is no gaming involved, you don't need such high-power videocards, because their 3-D processing power won't be used. A low-midrange videocard will give comparable results for your applications.

This GPU video performance analysis on X-Bit Labs should help you select an appropriate card. In the article conclusion, it is stated that anything upwars of a X1600 Pro is sufficient for video applications.

Please also note that, to the best of my knowledge, video editing, Mpeg2 creation, DVD authoring, and audio editing do not use the videocard processor, as they rely on the CPU for these tasks.

So really, the videocard is only necessary for video decoding.

Thanks to all of you for the responses. That Xbit article was very interesting. It seems that either of the two cards I mentioned or even a 7600GT would work well for any of my intended uses including playback of H264.
