I've been getting some flickering on my screen, like little black lines near the left side, and I figured my card might be overheating. It is currently sitting at 50 degrees, pretty much idle. Is this normal? What can I do to fix this flickering? My rig info is in my sig.

hmm... maybe I'll have to look into an aftermarket cooler. it's an Asus X1950 Pro... any recommendations for a GPU cooler?

Anyways, stock it shouldn't be overheating I am not positive on the normal temperatures of the X1950 Pro so lets see what others say

50C idle is about right for that card, unless it has a side fan blowing directly down on it.

53C idle is what mine normally does, have great airflow in my case as well (120MM fans)

hmm... in that case, what else could be causing the flickering? It sort of comes and goes- it's not doing it right now, but it usually happens atleast once a day.

edit: next time it happens I will try to catch it on camera if I can.

We need more information.

When did the flickering start?
Does it only happen in 3D mode?
Do you monitor your temps while gaming?
Are you overclocking?

First, check your cable connections between the card and monitor.

If the problem only exists in 3D mode, Download something like Ati Tray Tools that has an artifact tester, and check for stability (monitor your temps during this also). If all is normal, I think the next step would be to reinstall or upgrade your drivers.

Does windows crash afterward or does it just flicker and do strange things?

Whenever something like that happens its usually the video card overheating or it's not drawing enough power. I had the same problem recently and found out the card was indeed overheating, but then again that's because the stock cooler on my card sucked.

First, I'll try to describe the problem better.. here's something I threw together real quick to hopefully help explain it: http://img527.imageshack.us/my.php?image=problemkb9.swf
It's little black lines randomly flickering on the left side of the screen, usually near the bottom.
I'm still waiting for it to happen again so I can try to film it... sorry I can't really explain it any better.

And, Responding to Zaitsev's post:

- I first saw this flickering when I was trying to run my 20" monitor off just my integrated graphics. After I installed the new video card it went away, until recently.

- I usually only notice it when I'm surfing the internet, at the desktop, etc... I've never noticed it happening during games (but then again, I'm concentrating on the game)

- No, I usually don't monitor my temps while gaming (although I haven't done any gaming in the last month or so, since I've noticed this problem)

- No, I don't overclock at all.

- I will check the connections tonight when I turn my computer off.

- I just ran the ATI Tray Tools artifact tester... I only let it go for one minute because by then it was already up to 66 degrees :Q It was error-free for that minute, however.

edit: Responding to AlgaeEater's post.. I just see the flickering, nothing else happens.

It's obviously a hardware problem at this point no doubt. The question is we have to find out what's causing the artifacts to appear. It's interesting that you say the effect only seems to happen outside of games, because that's means its not happening all the time. (At this point we are assuming anyway)

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it might just be a loose contact with the video card to the monitor. One of the pins may be dirty or broken, who knows. If you're not freezing, then it's not overheating because overheated video cards freeze or lock up the computer and show artifacts in Windows, games and even in BIOS.

I doubt anything you can do with software right now would help. The best and only thing I can recommend in my limited knowledge, is to try a brand new video cable if you can.

Your monitor. My monitor recently started doing the same thing, also only in 2d mode, and it does it with both my X1900XT and 7600GT. It doesn't really bother me, but I can see how it might bother some people.

Sheesh, I wish I had those temps! My X1950XTX is 60c idle! I HAVE to use ATI Tools just to manually kick the loudass fan higher to cool that sucker down!
