System Specs:

Athlon XP 2700+ with vantec aeroflow (temps are frosty, no monitoring utility installed currently though)
ASUS A7V8X motherboard
2x512 (1gb) Kingston HyperX DDR 370 RAM
Hightech X1950 pro 512 IceQ3 turbo video card
PC P&C 510 ATX-PFC SLI certified multi-rail power supply; 3.3v-30a 5V-40a 12v-34a
Sound Blaster Live Audigy 2 ZS gamer
Western Digital Raptor 74gb
4 case fans, 1 blowing directly on card. Ambient temps are frosty

My Hightech AGP x1950pro 512mb card arrived today and I immediately got down to installing it. Hardware installation went smoothly and drivers seemed to go in without a hitch. In the link above, in the specifications tab, you'll see that the clock settings are as follows:

620 core
1480 memory

On instinct, I fired up Tray Tools to check out the clock settings. They are configured, and the card's BIOS is as configured as follows:

620 core
1540 memory
Idling at 36c

Here is a screenshot. Bios settings circled in blue, current settings circled in red.

As you can see, I adjusted the core clock to its respected 620 value, as advertised, but the card arrived to me at 590. No problems at all, infact, I'm sure I can squeeze more out of it...but that's for another time. Core temp is idling at 36c.

The memory, on the other hand, is over spec and I attempted to lower it down to it's 1480 value, but everytime I touch it the damn system black-screens me and I have to reboot. I then lowered it considerably down to 1400, and it went through fine. Trying to creep it back up to 1480 has been an exercise in futility, I keep getting black-screened when at around 1440. At it's current 1540 value, the system is stable at desktop, I currently do not have any benchmarking apps and do not want to risk burning out the card.

Also note, I have had zero problems, except when I try to dial the memory clock frequency down. Would it be advisable to hack the BIOS to manually change the memory clock? I am leaning towards "no", I'm going to give this a trial run with Oblivion and I'll report back with results.

Do you know if the x1950pro has different 2D and 3D clocks? I know the x1900xt/x cards do, and I'd be rich if I had a quarter for everytime someone complained that their x1900xt was not running at full speed, when in fact they were looking at the clocks in 2D mode. Could be the same issue with the x1950pro.

I thought it was the 2d clocks I was looking at first, too. But I don't see a single spot where I can toggle between 2d and 3d clocks.

I just got off Oblivion, GPU climbed to 40c from idle 36c. Pretty good in my book, nice cooler on this card, very nice. System needs more RAM though, Oblivion just eats all mine up.

Other than that, no signs of instability. I guess I don't need to worry about anything. I'll do some stress testing tomorrow, other than that, I'm sitting a little easier now.

Clock speeds adjust from 2d to 3d speeds when the driver detects ths launch of a 3d application which uses hardware acceleration.. you don't need to adjust anything.

Check out RivaTuner. It lets you graph the clocks over time so you can see what happens when you open a 3D app.

I found out what the problem was, meaning there wasn't really a problem in the first place. It turns out I have the second revision on the HIS x1950pro. NewEgg updated their listings and are now displaying the second revision, in the past they were selling the second revision through the first revision listing. Hell, even the box I got displayed the first revision clock speeds. Well now I know.

Anyone else who owns the card and are curious about the clock speeds should check out the link below.

If you use ATi Tray Tools, you can use the graph plotter there to check the clock speeds. Just set that going and then fire up a 3D game and see whether the graph changes. Did you by any chance click on the option to disable the HotKey Poller when you installed tray tols? I did that and I couldn't work out the reason why it wasn't working properly until my brother sorted it.

Be aware that there's two versions of this card, the Rev 1 comes with a Core speed of 620MHz and RAM speed of 1480MHz, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161068 Model # H195PRQT256DDAN-R

Also you can see that there's a second revision which runs at a core clockspeed of 590MHz and a RAM speed of 1540MHz http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161081 Look at the model: #H195PRQT256DDAN-R-V2 You can see that there's a V2 at the end of the model number, I'm talking about the 256MB version here cause the 512 Rev 1 cannot be found, seems that is out of stock and got replaced by the Rev 2 version, both cases 256MB and 512MB versions are getting the new revision.
