I know that you guys have argued this back and forth but I want to make sure I make the right decision in buying a video card. I am usually a Nvidia guy and have always had good luck with Nvidia but people are telling me that this card is better. I was planning on buying a ASUS EN7800GTX/2DHTV/512M Geforce 7800GTX 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card Link but now I am reconsidering getting the ASUS Extreme AX1900XTX/2DHTV Radeon X1900XTX 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 VIVO PCI Express x16 CrossFire Link
Does it matter that the Memory is 150mhz slower than the 7800GTX 512mb. Also I know that the 1900XTX has 16 pixel pipelines and the 7800GTX has 24. What difference does that make. I plan on building this within the next week. I already have the motherboard and the processor, DVD burner and hard drives on the way.
I would really appreciate if you guys could give me an idea of what to go with.
Thanks a lot for any help you can offer.
I am putting it with:
ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe
AMD64 4400+ Toledo X2
2x1gig sticks of OCZ Titanium
X-FI Sound
LIAN LI/KOOLANCE (watercooled) case
2- 74gig 10,000RPM Western Digital Raptor
DVD Burner
Hiper Type-R 580W Modular Power Supply (SLI certified)I have been told that this is a good Power Supply LINK( can ya guys give me any insight on whether this is good or what to go with)

in most test x1900xt/xtx beats the GTX 512
And since right now the price for GTX 512 is at least $150 more(if you can find it at all) ]
i would get the x1900xt/xtx
the 1900xt/xtx has 48 shaders while the GTX 512 has 24
pipes are dead next gen there will be no pipes you cant compare ATI pipe vs nvidia's pipe.

I just switched from SLI'd 7800GTs to an X1900XTX if that says anything.

However, you do have an SLI board, in which case you will not be able to ran Crossfire if you decide on another card to ran dual GPU!. Both cards are VERY fast, the ATI presently is the fastest, but drivers are also at present not the best.
You could ran 2 x GT for same price at either card and have same overall speed and use the board for what its built for or wait for the G71 due end of Feb.

and then you could also wait for r590 as well. Just get the card you can get now waiting never helps.

You're missing the point. There's always another card coming around the corner. Who says the G71 won't be a paper launch, or pull a 7800gt 512mb and retail for over the MSRP and then dissappear? Then maybe you'd have to wait another month for stock and then might as well wait for the R590, which might have similar issues. Waiting for computer parts is unnesessary at best.

The point I was trying to make I guess cooler, is that Nvidia havent release a new card in over 6 months, ATI have just released and will not be releasing another straight away. Its seems a waste to make the premium he paid for the SLI mobo go to ATI and lose his expandiblilty.

I'd go with the X1900 XTX. It's a lot cheaper and available.

However, if you can wait, I would wait.

I just went from a 7800 GTX to the X1900 XTX. Here's what I don't like about it.

The Warranty is only 1 year. This is ridiculous! My BFG had a lifetime warranty.
ATIs Catalyst Control Center stinks compared to NVIDIAs ForceWare.
White cooler with stupid Ruby picture on it. Do they think we're all a bunch of kids?

I'm going back to NVIDIA as soon as they put something out that performs as good or better then the X1900 XTX.

last time i heard they just got it taped out thats at least 6-8 weeks.

According to the Inq, G71 taped out in the first half of Jan. Now, the Inq gets a lot of flack since they seem willing to post *anything* as "news" if it comes from anyone on the street that they can call a "source". However, they've been pretty much right on about R580. So, how knows. First half of Jan might be right.

So, 6-8 weeks after Jan 15th (let's go with the last day of the first half) would put it out between Feb 25th and March 11th. Earlier if "first half of Jan" meant Jan 6th.

Either way, we don't know, and neither does the Inq. All you can do is buy what you need right now. There's always something coming around the corner.

However, if you're wanting to buy NOW because there's a game coming out SOON that you want to upgrade for... that's a different story. Don't do that.

IMO, unless you're an enthusiast who wants the very best and latest, or just like to play with new hardware, there are 2 times to buy a video card (and neither of them involve a new card's rollout): 1. when you can't play games that you are trying to play right now with the card you have at the settings you want, and benchmarks show an upgrade would help 2. if you get an amazing deal on a new card and selling off your old card makes it only cost you small change for the upgrade.

Oh, what do I care, put an ATI card in your Nforce SLI mobo, your money.

Seems you cant get away from the fanboys riding rough-shot over you.

The ATI x1900 series IS the fastest card but drivers wont be mature until the G71 is out, the G70 series prices will drop and purchasing the new chip will give you a future upgrade course, your choice.

Well what games do you play? what monitor?

According to xbitlabs the 7800GTX 512mb edges out against the X1900XTX. (NV wins 11, ATi wins 9)

Btw i would grab the X1900XT. I would grab the XTX if you are gonig to OC because those baddies come with 1.1ns ram (can be OCed really high).

So your saying that the G71(7900) will be coming out within the next month? I would be willing to wait if that card was for sure coming out within the month.

Apparently note, the guys reckon late Feb. The ATI is a great card, VERY fast, but the point is your mobo. You will not be able to buy 2nd ATI card for that system down the road. If you havent already bought it, change it for a crossfire board

It's rumored to be coming out sometime in March. No one but Nvidia knows for sure. If you want/need a card now, the x1900 is the best choice now. If you can wait, then wait to see what the g71 brings to the table. Waiting 1 or 2 months to see how both nextgen cards compare is different that waiting 6+ months for the following generation to come out imo.

Unless the OP plans on going SLI in the future than this point is irrelevant. I've had an SLI board for the last year or so and I only utilized the SLI capability for 3 months of that. I don't feel bad at all that I didn't use it more.

IMO, the X1900XT is a great buy right now. Yes, the drivers need some work. Yes, if you spend a lot of time staring at the insides of your computer with it flipped upside down you might get annoyed that Ruby is on your video card. Not the biggest hurdles to get over in my opinion. If you wait for G71 than you'll just have to deal with immature drivers in March. And there's a possibility that the furry dog creature will be on your video card, which seems a bit more childish than Ruby, if that kind of thing bothers you.

G71 drivers were released like 3 months ago (before the 7800GTX 512mb was released). Its another hint that NV is already on there A2 revision. If the G71 comes with that beefy quadro cooler, noise/heat would be a zero problem. (Also there are NO pics on that cooler apart from a NV logo, BFG ones have green flames on the edges plus a "OMGWFTBBQ" sticker you can stick on the card).

The 512MB 7800GTX is part of the G70 line of cards. The G71 is yet to be released and who knows what heatsink/sticker it will have on it. Drivers for the G71 will have to mature just like the other video cards that were just released.

Save $100 and get X1900XT not XTX version. Also go with Sapphire or ATI or Powercolor; no need to pay for Asus brand name (esp since it's identical to the ATI card).

first of all, thanks for all the great feedback. I play Americas Army and Battlefield 2. The only reason I wanted to go with the ASUS over another brand is because they have 3 year warranty. Ah, its a hard choice whether to wait a month or not. I'm also curious whether the price of the G71 is going to be around the price of the X1900XTX. Im assuming that the price of the 7800GTX 512mb should drop within the next week to be competitive with the X1900XTX.

If Nvidia has any supply than it might drop in price. IMO they are pretty hard to come by and will continue to be exorbitantly priced like the 512MB 6800 Ultra still is (or was a few months ago).
