I don't understand why it would be a pain in the ass when it comes to your motherboards. Mine work fine with it (Used on a MSI P965 and a DFI NF4 Ultra-D).
Because it blows hot air directly at the motherboard, my chipset got too hot to handle when I tried getting my old 3400+ to 2.9GHz and it completely ruined the headroom of my FSB, same result with my Gigabyte 965P DS3 (which gets hot enough thank you.)

At least with the VF900 the air is free-flowing and ample case cooling easily resolves the problem, the Accelero X2 blasts instead of flows.

I like to see some proof of that overclock. Maybe some validated 3D Marks '03 scores?
Firstly; I never used 3D Mark 03, only 3D Mark 05 and 06 which as you well know usually record X1K clocks as 0/0.

Secondly; I don't even have any X1800XT scores anymore. See my sig as to why.

Thirdly; If you couldn't get your X1800XT any higher than 700/800 then maybe you should've tried better cooling. I never got my X1800XT anywhere near 730MHz core with my Accelero X2, but they easily get to 730MHz core on Thermalright or Zalman air (assuming your case airflow doesn't suck) and 780MHz+ core with a decent water block.

Too bad the Thermaltake AT1 shown at the 2006 Computex show isn't available yet. I'm willing to bet that it will be a good seller now that Artic Cooling has inexplicably gone to non-DHES HSFs.
