Brand new card, unable to anything video intensive due to this problem... It will run fine for a while, but then after a certain amount of time it will "freeze" for just a few moments, then will RUN for a few moments, then freeze again. It keeps repeating this over and over in 3d intensive games. When I try to watch video files, the player will freeze, then skip ahead several seconds and start playing, again it then keeps repeating this behaviour until reboot (then I get that same very short grace period where everything works properly).

Any insight or possible solutions people could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Occasionally if my x1900xtx is running hot Oblivion will freeze. How hot is your x1900xt

It's not even causing the fan to spin up much on the card, I thought about heat, and took off the side of my case, and was using a room fan blowing directly on all my components, it still happens.

It also happens when just trying to watch video files in any given media player, and those don't tend to stress the card too much...

Please post the rest of your rig specs, and tell us what kind of card you had prior. Some background info that might help someone tech the problem.

...welcome to AT forums btw :)

edit: (and this applies to both of you) what do you mean by freeze? Split second hiccup or like a lockup that lasts for a few seconds...?

Thank you for the welcome, Full specs are

3500+
A8R32-MVP deluxe
OCZ GameXStream 600w
OCZ EL platinum PC3200 2x1GB
x1900xt
Audigy 2 ZS gamer

My old card was a 9800 pro, which was AGP so this is mostly a new system (the only carry overs are the CPU, sound card, and DVD drive)

This is driving me nuts, computer works perfectly for around 8 mins after a reboot, and then I get the constant pausing/skipping whatever you want to call it

It's probably a technical problem beyond my knowledge, but here are some simple things to think about anyway:

Is anything in your system overclocked?
Are you exceeding the texture memory on the card?
Have you defragmented your hard drive?
Did you add exceptions to your antivirus program for your games?

I've been doing some testing so I thought I'd update the thread, even though I'm more stumped now.

It doesn't SEEM to be video related now, as I've been running 3dmark repeatedly with no errors at all, and no halting, of course trying to run a normal app gives me problems.

Even though this doesn't seen to be a video problem anymore, does anyone have any insight? (HD related maybe? I don't think 3dmark uses the HD while it's running?)

Also to answer your questions nullpointerus:

Nothing is overclocked
I don't know if I'm exceeding the texture memory
HD hasn't been defragged (it's brand new, formatted and windows installed [twice trying to fix this])
First install I was running my anti virus software, this install I haven't installed it yet. Infact On this install I simply installed the OS, video card drivers, and then a game to test (and the errors were there)

OK well I got some redundant questions, please bear with me,

the mobo, when did you get it? did you get a refurb?

Have you tried to run the machine using the onboard sound, also I have heard talk about a BIOS update for that board, you may want to look into that and try the soundcard idea.
either way check your bios, make sure that the information that it displays about your components match your commponents...

I hope that some of this seems helpful for ya.

GREAT, now I got a question that really only benefits me... did you update the BIOS on your own accord or did I have a good idea for once?

either way, it is good to hear that once again the greatest forum in the world (Anandtech) has solved yet another computer issue... now you go to your room and game on!

also let us know how the overall performance is.

You should get a CF card and throw them in Xfire :)

Bite your tounge. :p I have a 550W Ultra X2-Connect coming in this Monday to power my X1900XT. I didn't think they were all they good either until doing some research on them, essentially they're just a new company but by no means poor. OMG I can't wait to go modular! My case is a mess of wires and looks awful, the cables are even suppose to be very flexable as well so this should help. :D

i'd try a different psu, why buy that psu when theres much better more reliable psu's on the market, even modular ones if you must.
