X1900XT or eVGA 7900GT KO

Pretty much all the companies expect overclocking and dont even bother asking. MSI had their own custom program built into their ati drivers...
 
Personally, I just bought a eVGA 7900GT KO over the 1900xt for a new build (this week); I'll try and get back to you on how it does (the card is coming Thursday).

Reasons for buying it though:
1) Less heat then the 1900xt, and less power

2) the 512mb and the 90nm core will likely bring the "reloaded" 7900GT closer to the 1900xt, not to mention the newer memory supposedly isn't having the trouble the original 7900GT's were. (It will not be as good I believe, but less taxing on the system.)

3) eVGA has the step-up program so if I choose to, come November, I can switch to the G80 at a cheaper price.

4) SLI is alot easier to come by then Crossfire if I choose to.

5) Did I mention the $299 price tag from Newegg? Also, the reviews, while biased likely, from Newegg are pretty good; I would love to see a review involving this particular card though.

This 512MB version of the 7900GT really has me intrigued at a $300 price point. I was all ready to buy a X1900XT, but now I'm rethinking that for the exact reasons you mentioned. Less heat/power, it's 512MB now matches the XT, and for $300 with the possibility of the step-up, this is really hard to pass up.


 
yea but then you still wouldn't get good frame rates with quality settings turned up. just watch those framte rates drop with as u increase eye candy and resolution

Define good frame rates and which games are you referring to, or is it any game?

Are you saying someone can't play WoW at 16x12 with high video settings while maintaining around 60 FPS without a X1900XT?

On the topic of HQ v Q, there is quite a significant drop in fps even on my 6600GT.

I've done some benchies that i'll post when i get the time.

Cool... I wasn't even aware this card had been released & it does make the choice a lot harder, but I think I'd still go with the X1900XT.

Cool... I wasn't even aware this card had been released & it does make the choice a lot harder, but I think I'd still go with the X1900XT.

It's been out in Aus for quite some time 🙂

 
Or, lets say your card dies while your cards in a state of OC.

They probably will find out.

But the problem with X1900 OCing is increased power consumption (120W~ around XTX levels compared to GTXs ~86W) and the heat will go up.

IMO the biggest problem with the X1900XT/XTX's os the power consumption and heat. It's really almost ridiculous how much more power they draw than even 7900 GTX (not to mention the GT) for around the same performance.

I'm think that when the 512 version comes back in stock at Newegg, I'm going to jump on it assuming it's still $300 or less. Now if it's equal (or slightly more) in price than a X1900XT, that makes the decision much more difficult for me.

Really? Not according to BFG.

Who is the "etc"? Who else besides eVGA covers overclocking in their warranty? Nobody. Dont try to mislead (lying to) people by thinking more than eVGA covers overclocking.

IMO the biggest problem with the X1900XT/XTX's os the power consumption and heat. It's really almost ridiculous how much more power they draw than even 7900 GTX (not to mention the GT) for around the same performance.

I'm think that when the 512 version comes back in stock at Newegg, I'm going to jump on it assuming it's still $300 or less. Now if it's equal (or slightly more) in price than a X1900XT, that makes the decision much more difficult for me.

In stock at Newegg as I type this @ $349 ... looks like a GTX with a wimpy heatsink which may limit overclocking potential, I'd say thats too much money because at that price you can snag an OEM Sapphire X1900XTX instead.

 
I strongly considered the 7900GT/512 before I found the 1900XT in my sig (Open Box). I upgraded from my 7800GT, so right now games are playing like a dream - after one card, I think I'm back in the ATI camp (8500 -> 9800Pro -> 7800GT -> X1900XT).

I was apprehensive about the CCC and drivers, but so far they've been running smoothly. After DCPro on my CCC install with the 9800Pro (now since sold), it ran wonderfully as well. Are people still having issues with CCC/ATI drivers? Curious.

The install/upgrade if drivers is more trouble with ATI, but once correctly installed I've found them to work fine... currently I'm using Cat 6.6 with Chuck patch & having no problems.

you are brain dead if you think the 7900gt is not significantly faster than a 7800gt.

op a lot will depend on your PSU too. can it support the monster that is a x1900xt.

personally i love the x900xt and would buy it a heart beat if my wallet allowed that. but i really really like the 7900gt since it is what a graphic card should be. small, light, low on power consumption, low on heat output, low on price and high on OC abiblity and has EVGA 🙂 . did i mention i like slim women too.

It is in stock now. It is really hard to choose.

My CPU won't arrive until early September, so I will hold my purchase for 2 weeks.

Yes, askshayt makes some foolish statements, and just plain wrong ones too.

As do you. Why do you think the OP would have to upgrade his PSU? You mention overclocking the 7900GT, and low power consumption, overclocking uses more power. And if someone vmods one, it is about doublt stock wattage used.

btw, hes already ordered a X1900XT. So its all pretty much moot.

my 7900 GT KO (eVGA n584 model) runs all the games I play at 1680x1050 with high graphics settings without a problem. I haven't tried FEAR on it yet though, but I might as soon as I grab the FEAR multiplayer file tonight and install that.

the best part is that it's quiet, which was very important to me.

My x1900xt is now solidly running at 655/775 and the fan never goes to 100%. It's very quiet. I suspect that most people who complain it's loud overclock it more than I did and force the fan to spin up sooner than necessary.
