X1900XT or 8800GT?

I currently have an HIS X1900XT card and was thinking about upgrading to an 8800GT (G92)...is the performance difference worth it?...I know the 8800GT is DX10 and will be the faster card but my X1900XT has been an amazing card for me and the performace is great (I can pretty much run any game at 1920 X 1200, with most graphical settings on 'High')...I'm just worried about messing with a good thing...worth it or no?

the 8800GT does use the new G92 core correct?

Yes the 8800gt uses the G92 core. I think most here will agree that the upgrade would be worth it.

I went from a x1900xt to a 8800gt, and my performance nearly doubled in many games at 1920x1200. Of course, if you're only playing older games like CS:S then the difference in performance is hardly noticeable. But in newer games like Crysis and COD4, the 8800gt is noticeably much faster.

I was worried because the 8800GT is considered a 'mainstream' card and not 'high end' and was thinking that performance might suffer...I've always went with 'high end' video cards and this would be my first budget or mainstream one

Well its not the highest end (that would be the 8800 Ultra, and 3870x2) but it sure is a whole screamin' lot faster than a X1900XT.

I'm also thinking about using the 8800GT as a temporary solution until the new 9000 series cards are released from Nvidia and then use the EVGA step up program to upgrade to their latest high end single GPU offering---I was never a fan of Crossfire/SLI or even the new dual GPU cards...I prefer a high end single card, single GPU card

Same here. For the cost of running 2x 8xxx series cards in SLI, I'd rather get the highest end 9xxx series card when it comes out. SLI and Crossfire have always been a waste IMO.
