X1900XT Crossfire card?

I will be receiving by mail any day now a HIS Hightech Radeon X1900XT 512MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 CrossFire Ready IceQ Video Card. My question is if I want to go to a crossfire mode...do I need the same exact card...in other words another HIS Hightech Radeon X1900XT 512MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 CrossFire Ready IceQ Video Card?

Thanks

No, you need an X1900 Master Card. You may also be able to use an X1950 Master Card. It would be cheaper at that point to just buy a more modern card as Mastercards typically cost a fair bit more than the regular version.

So, let me get this straight...If I buy an X1900 mastercard then I can use any X1900 crossfire ready card with it...correct??

I believe you can only do Crossfire with an X1900XT using a master-card based on an X1900XT or X1950XT/XTX. (in other words no Pro's or GT's)

To be super-explicit about it:

The X1900 or X1950 Mastercard would be paired with the:
X1900XT
X1900XTX
X1950 XTX

The X1950 Pro does not require a special Mastercard and uses a special connector to connect the cards. This works in similar fashion to SLI. Future ATI cards will use this method.

stockjock,
If you decide you need a 512mb x1900 master card, let me know.
PM me. 😉

how do you know if you have a master card or a crossfire card? will 2 master cards work to become SLI?

and are two XT 512mb cards with 3rd party coolers OC'd severely, surpass the speeds of an 8800GT 380mb?

The Master card has one DVI port and one extremely funky looking port for the crossfire connector. The regular Crossfire-ready cards are just dual DVI.

I'm not sure if you can Crossfire two Mastercards together.

The two 512MB XTs will beat the GTS 320MB card soundly in high resolution/AA/AF settings where the card runs out of RAM. It still wins when the GTS is not so impacted, but the GTS is a cheaper buy at this point and doesn't have all the pitfalls of a dual-card setup.
