I didn?t find this information when I was searching so im posting my results. I hope it helps someone.

I took off the stock coolers for my x1900xt and my x850xt. Cleaned them up with some Isopropyl and applied some as5 (artic silver 5). Sprayed them out with my air compressor.

before-
x1900xt - idle 62 load 80
x850xt - idle 65 load 82

after-
x1900xt - idle 40 load 68
x850xt - idle 40 load 65

My testing method was a simple one. Using atitool i had the fan at 100% for everything. Then ran the 'scan for artifacts function' for about 30min for load. For idle I just started windows and waited around 5m.

more info (thx Truenofan)
this was in 3D mode. default votages, and speeds.
x1900xt = 625/725 = 1.425/2.086/2.086/1.486
x850xt = 520/560 = NA

Good luck!

22 and 25C drop from thermal paste alone? What were the exact room temperates of the for each set of tests (before & after)?

Honestly, this sounds more like:
(A) The heatsinks weren't tightened down all the way from the factory or whatever, and you happened to tighten them down a bit more after application of as5, causing them to make better contact, and thus reduce temps.
(B) You did the initial 'stock' test with a room temp of 85F or something (in the middle of the afternoon, etc) and then did the as5 tests later with a much cooler room temp of, say, 65F (numbers are just for example; you understand what I'm getting at).
(C) a combination of A & B.

Those drops are too big to be due to as5's superiority over stock pastes alone. Does anyone have a similar experience? Anyone feel like replicating his test, except being sure to note exact room temps before & after and examining how tightly the heatsink is attached before initially removing it? Would be interesting if his results could be duplicated. I might be willing to crack the heatsink off my 6800U if others confirm this :)

Well i did the same with my msi 6600gt, cleaned the heatsink (it had a small cake of dust) and reaplied AS5 instead of the stock thermal paste.
Idle temps stayed the same, at load the temps droped 5 degrees.
I think most of the temp drop was due to me cleaning the heatsink and fan from dust though

after smthmlk mentioned it, i am positive the screws were not tight at all. infact i was able to not even use a screw driver on my x850!

then with what Dark Cupcake stated. my heatsinks were pretty durty. exp the x850. i had to take the fan apart, there was so much crap it it.

@smthmlk
the room temp was a good 74-76 F degrees.
