x1900xt 3d issues

I just got my X1900XT 256 this week and installed it today. It replaced a X800 XL so I just swapped out the cards. I can't get any 3D apps to open--they either just do nothing or they give a message that they've "encountered a serious error." And the ones that don't give a message don't appear in task manager--it's like they try to load and then just quit.

I tried Drive Cleaner and reinstalled the drivers several times, but it's the same issue over and over. I'm not sure it's hardware, because Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 had started doing this before the new card, although other games worked.

Any suggestions or anything else to try short of a total Windows reinstall?

I can get Civ 4 to play, and it runs just fine. Does this make this seem more software related than hardware?

I found a utility that will uninstall DirectX for me so I can reinstall it. Anyone ever try this?

I'd really like to avoid a reformat/reinstall if I can (I finally understand the appeal of Blu-Ray discs--backing up all of this stuff on 25gb discs would be a LOT easier!)

I've done that a couple of times--both with and without CCC. I used Drive Cleaner, too, for good measure. Same result.

Oh please, don't even mention Blu-Ray... :p

When did this happen? Right after you installed the card or some time after that?

Well, or something like it that is perhaps a little less Sony related! :D

Well, my memory is a little fuzzy, since I had my computer taken apart for a few days while I had work being done on the house...

Before, on my X800 XL I had roller coaster tycoon 3 suddenly start give a "serious error" when it was launched. I uninstalled it, and never got around to reinstalling it, as I bought the Civ 4 expansion and was addicted. Ordered card, card arrived, installed card, reinstalled RCT3, didn't work, tried SW Empire at War, didn't work, installed Faces of War demo, didn't work. Civ 4, for whatever reason, still works fine even with the new card. Uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers, used Drive Cleaner, tried with and without CCC, all to no avail.

For all of these reasons, I think it's software related, and specifically I think it's something within Windows, maybe DirectX. With Start Wars EAW, the disc will start to spin up, I'll get an hourglass for a couple of seconds, and then instead of the screen changing to launch the game, the hourglass disappears and I'm still in Windows. I checked Task Manager and there's nothing related to the game running. Either the same thing happens for others, or it gives the serious error message that is given by RCT3. Or, it simply runs correctly (I played a little Civ4 at max everything just perfectly.)

Tried DirectX Eradicator, but it said it didn't support my version of Windows (it would work for DX 9.0c, but I'm guessing that it hasn't been updated for SP2 or something).
Any last suggestions before I begin the long process of backing everything up for a reformat? Also, any thoughts on why Civ4 would work and others won't?

Why not just grab the newest build of DX9.0c and reinstall? If that doesn't work, then an OS reinstall is probably your only chance. You can always try a repair install to wipe out the system files, you don't neccessarily need to reformat and install from scratch.

Tried reinstalling DX 9.0c off the Star Wars Empire at War disc...it gets done after about a second, as if it merely checked and found the files already present. Any way to force it to reinstall fully?
