so after many reviews on different websites what do you guys think which is better ? an overclocked 7900GT or a stock X1900XT 256mb ? personally i think 7900gt is still great bang for buck and offers excellent overclocking potential.

I guess i'd have to ask if you mean the 256 or 512mb 7900GT?

If you mean 256, i'd go with the X1900XT 256.

If you mean 512, the it gets a little more difficult. Given the prices of x1900xt 512mbs these days, i think i'd just kick in the extra cash for a x1900xt 512 myself, but since that's not an option, i'd have to see a 512mb 7900GT OC benchmarked with HQ driver settings (which i always use), compared to a an X1900XT 256...

I'm looking at both cards (and the GTX) and don't like what I'm hearing about the noise and heat (especially noise) generated by the ATI card. Maybe you should wait for the 1950 to come out with the better cooler.

i just read an article about 256mb 7900gt superclock at www.bit-tech.net and suprisingly its performance is very very similar to a 512mb x1900xtx ! that is amazing
