Previously posted about a 8800GTS 640MB in an Athlon X2 machine. As I wait the arrival of a backordered 8800GTS (via BB), I plan on upgrading my rig to an Abit IP35 Pro and a E6750 and 2GB RAM this week. How will my GPU perform in WinXP and Vista (yes, I'm dual-booting to play Shadowrun)? Will I be bottle-necked at the GPU?

I primarily use my machine for gaming (eg, BF2, Q4, LOTRO, Shadowrun, GTR2, FEAR, etc)

Thanks.

your X1900XT will run fine in the C2D setup.

I used a Sapphire X1950Pro 512MB AGP in my C2D rig for a few months before I got my 8800GTS and GA-P35-DS3R, it ran perfectly fine and had no problems running every game that I threw at it (FEAR, Q4, BF2, STALKER etc).

It will depend on the resolution you're playing at. With my Core 2 Duo (e6300 at 2.8GHz, nForce 650i, Radeon X1800XT 512MB) I can play most anything at 1680x1050. Oblivion has a hard time keeping up when HDR is enabled, but BF2 works fine (I did the widescreen hack), FEAR and HL2 all play fine, even with most of the settings turned up. When I was running the same setup at 1280x1024 I could play anything (it seemed) with all settings on High. YMMV, but I think it would be a good holdover until the 8800 comes (I'm waiting to get the funding for an 8800 or 8900 as well). This was on XP until February and Vista since.

let me know how it goes. I already have my ip35 pro, x1950xt, 2gb pc 8500, and antec 900 case. Now I just need a cpu to drop in there... I wonder which one will get cheap enough soon enough?

Thanks for all the great input. I'm currently running my X1900XT on Viewsonice VX922 at 1280x1024, and will be doing so once my new setup arrives. So, I should be good to go then?

BTW: I was one mouse button and $8 cheaper from purchasing my e6750 this morning at Mwave. It was like watching the stock market today. The e6750 went from $191 to $195 to $199 in a matter of 6 hours.

i recommend you guys get Quad core... Intel has dropped the price in Australia. They are going from $280AUD to $380 depending on the shop.

I can buy QX6600 for $280AUD. ($248USD)

But i don't know why Intel hasn't done a price drop in US yet because newegg still sell them for $375.

Agreed on Quad Core over dual core + overclocking.

There was a price drop but demand has increased the price at Newegg. Other places still sell it close to $300, still above $266 MSRP though. X1900XT will bottleneck C2D but so will 8800GTS 640. The system will be good enough for some time though unless you are going to crank 4AA/16AF at 1600x1200 then it probably isnt enough. If you just want to hold yourself over until GeForce 9 comes around, it's a good card. I myself can't seem to justify spending $260 for 8800GTS 320 over X1950XT 256mb which costs $150 considering but there are very few games where 8800GTS 320 is 50%-70% faster (both lack enough memory for high resolutions and AA). The 640mb version is more than twice as much $, but isn't 2x the performance either.

Yeah, its better just to wait for the new refresh of cards, cause for now, the X1950XT 256MB can play any games at high without turning down eye candy at 1280x1024 with FSAA and AF, if you play higher the VRAM limitation will come into play. And no 8800GTS will offer you twice the performance except in rare cases like the Lost Planet game and when you play games at ultra high resolution with lots of FSAA which will not be that playable neither.

Yeah, I originally bought my x1950xt as a holdover until 2nd generation dx10 cars came out, but now I think I'll just keep the card until I upgrade to a 24 or 30" monitor. I haven't found anything that gives it problems at 1440x900. BTW, I decided to go with e6750 b/c I needed a system asap, I didn't want to risk getting stuck with a b3, and I'm going to have my current system and the new build in the same 12x12 room. In south texas. With no AC. ok, I have ac, but sometimes it doesn't feel like it...
