X1900GT vs. 7900GT

Alright guys, I just sold my X850XT, and Im looking for a new video card around the $200 range. From what I have seen so far, the 7900GT seems to have an edge over the X1900GT, especially on the 7900GT cards that come overclocked.

My problem is, I dont have a spare PCI-E card to use so I need to pick up a card as soon as possible, so I dont have to use my back-up computer. The X1900GT is 185 shipped right now from newegg, and the cheapest I can find a 7900GT for is around 240, and I dont even think it is instock at the moment.

Basically my question is, at 185 bucks is the X1900GT the better choice? Or should I stick it out and wait for a 7900GT to come in stock around 220 or so??

Also, one more thing, the X1900GT seems to draw a decent amount of power, but only like 10 watts more than my X850XT, which ran fine in my system. Would that make any difference?

Please do a search as this question has been posted a thousand times already.

The 7900GT is generally faster than the X1900GT; the main advantage of the X1900GT is that the cooler is quieter.
 
I like my x1900gt. Iq is great, but do not own a 7900gt, so can't compare. The x1900gt was quite loud and hot so put on an x2. Have heard that most 7900gt's also benefit from an after market cooler as they also tend to be loud.
 
thanks, and I apologize for asking this question again, but the difference here is that im curious if the price difference is worth the quality difference. On most of the previous discussions, the assumption was that the prices were basically the same, but Im leaning towards getting the X1900GT because the $50 difference seems to be enough to warrant getting the X1900GT. But thats why I want to know what you guys think.
 
What resolution do you play at? If I were you, I'd just get the x1900gt because its a lot cheaper, but the 7900gt does perform well for the price.
 
i wait a week or 2 for X1950XT , it comes with DDR 4 memory : ) finnally the Ring Bus Memory Controller 512-bit is being used.
 
The reviews I read, depends on which games you play and how important subtle differences in IQ are. The x1900 line does have less shimmering and is considered better iq by hocp. The 7900gt has noticably faster fps in some games, is cooler, uses less power and did have a reputation for needing rma. So pick one and play some games.
 
Thanks for the input guys. It seems so hard not to pull the trigger on having the X1900GT in a few days from new egg.

Also, I have the 24 inch dell. Thast why I am upgrading, the X850XT just wasnt quite enough in some of theses games at 1900 x 1280 - I play half life 2, WoW, FEAR, Call of Duty 2.

As of now at stock 1800XT should overall be the best option.
preferably 512mb.

try to get 1900XT if you can extend your budget aroudn 320$ or so after rebate.

In future shader intensive games 1900GT might win over the others, check aoe3 benchies if they show a diff.

also, i think 256mb 1900xt will soon be released, read somewhere.

It's already being used now.

Keep in mind that if you run under HQ the shimmering is practically non-existant but the 7900GT should still be faster in most situations.

It's very hard to justify a X1900GT over a 7900GT especially if you're going after-market cooling for both cards.
 
Thanks for all the input guys, it definitely does seem that the 7900GT is better, but gosh, for 50-60 bucks less, it seems like its so hard to pass on the X1900GT. I really cant afford to spend as much as the X1900XT, and although i would like to get the X1800XT, it draws too much power for my PSU.

Do you still think that the X1900GT would be a pretty good upgrade over my X850XT??
 
These benchmarks should help you decide.

Those guys use HQ on the nVidia cards and there are X1900GT and 7900GT scores in the graphs. Look at the performance difference and then decide if the cost difference is worth it to you.

Either card will be a large upgrade over your last card.
 
Do the high temps really matter that much on the X1900GT? I have heard that, although it runs hot, it doesnt really have much effect on the card. My case temperature is under 30 and my CPU temp is 33, so I got stuff pretty cool.

And also, is the 7900GT really that loud? Some people have said its fine, others have said its loud to the point they cant even stand it. I place a fairly large premium on noise, and if i would have to replace the fan on the 7900GT, that would put me up to about 275 bucks for the card and cooler....almost 100 more than the X1900GT, and that is waaaaay too much price difference for not enough quality difference.

Basically it sounds like the X1900GT is going to work for me (assuming i wont have to replace the fan) - its only gonna cost me 185 bucks, its decently quiet, i need something as soon as possible, and its a solid upgrade over what I have......but if the 7900GT really isnt too loud, and i could grab it for about 220 over the next couple weeks, that would be my pick....

man, why is this so hard?????
 
I went for the X1900GT for some of the same reasons as you, and I like it. It's quieter than I thought it would be, but runs warmer than I thought it would. I might put a Zalman or Accelero on it at some point. What many haved failed to notice, other than yourself, is that it can be found for considerably lower than a 7900GT or a X1800XT. In fact, the X1800XT that many are pushing is the more expensive 512 meg version. I got a BBA X1900GT for under $170 but if someone wants to pay $50 to $75 more and get a X1800XT or 7900GT (that they may have to RMA) be my guest. I can live with lesser framerates in some games and apps. Whatever makes you the happiest. I upgraded from a X800XL and I like the difference it makes.
 
thanks hmorphone, thats kinda what i wanted to hear. I still need to know - what impact does the high temp have on the card, and on the system. If I would probably need to replace the fan on the X1900GT, i think Ill probably just hold off until the 7900GT comes down and in stock....

Once again, is the 7900GT really as loud as some are making it out to be?

If I'm on a somewhat tight budget should I go with the $170 x1900gt over the $270 7900gt and $230 x1800xt? How's the price/performance and reliability between them?
 
CompUSA had a deal a few days ago on 7800GTX's (basically a a 7900GT with less overclockability but a better/quieter cooler) for 200$.

As said in terms of performance - read some reviews as it really depends on which games you play. The 7900gt did have a bad rap for reliability, but I think that it likely resolved now. Also from what I understand, all 3 will benefit from and aftermarket cooler, such as the x2. My 1900gt sure did, is very quiet and temps dropped to the low 50's on load.
