X1900GT vs 7900GS/GT

What would offer the best performance?

System in sig, but wondering about for future so I wont be running the same system when I do purchase a video card.

I saw on an e-tailer here in Canada the X1900GT going for $265 which puts it at a much better price than 7900GS/GT solutions--> With no mail in rebate

The GS is going for about ~$280, GT for about ~$300. (CDN dollars) + tax

I'd run at 1280x1024/1280x960 depending on if it can handle it. I like AA and AF, but am no longer used to running it as my 6600GT hurts nowadays on new games. But if I can run it I would. I play mostly FPS, looking to UT2007 and Crysis.

So which card would offer the best performance at 1280x1024 with letsay 4xAA/8xAF ?

Also, how do the coolers compare? I know the 7900GS/GT runs cooler, but what about noise also? With the future upgrade I most likely will keep my current case.

Basically im looking for the best performance I can get for under $300CDN (before taxes, cheaper = better if they are neck and neck)

Help is greatly appreciated.

EDIT -> I did want a X1900XT... I can get one for around $390 + half tax but thats pretty damn expensive to me still

It looks like the X1900GT is cheaper. Buy that card. But i can garuantee you, that the GT will just be enough to play UT2007/Crysis. (Its like using the 6600GT to play F.E.A.R)

Update on prices,

You know how Ati prices kill nVidia in the states currently, with awesome deals on X1900XT? Well the prices for ATi here are horrid..

X1800GTO 320
X1900GT 350
X1900XT 380

WTF?

7900GS 260-280(HDCP/OC)
7900GT 300-340(OC)
7950GT 360-390

Grab the 300~ GT, 3rd party cooler and OC the hell out of it. Or the GS if you want to save some cash.

Maybe i should have said it more clearer. I said like. So im assuming that low high end cards of current generation will play at the levels a 6600GT would do now currently. Well hopefully

At your original prices I would've gotten the X1900GT. At the new prices you show, and if you're not going to OC, I'd probably get a factory OC'd 7900GT.

found a X1900XT 256 ... for 315, is that better than a 7950GT Ffor 340 or X1900XT 512 for 380?

Yep. It will outrun the 7950 GT in most benches, but barely a difference at your res from the XT to the XTX. Go for the XT

If your getting a video card at the cost for an education, don't do it. Video cards come and go, work on getting a good degree so you can get a good job that pays enough to get all of the video cards you want.

I just had a similar choice, in the uk:
X1900GT £125
7900GS £122
The GT was certainly the faster card, although I note all GT's are not alike. Most *newer* X1900GT's only have a 512mhz core, the older ones run at 575mhz. The 512mhz core ones use 1300mhz memory as opposed to 1200mhz, but I bet they all use the same bog standard 1.4ns chips so have the same o/c ability. Hence look for the 575mhz core X1900GT's (such as the club3d X1900RX that I saw for £125).

Incidentally in the end I just bit the bullet and bought a 7900GTO for £200

My tuition will cost 5 grand for the may -> august term... im on a double work term so I will be able to make ~13 grand by then!

minus the costs of gas and other stuff... pc will be purchaised boxingday we will see how price points change by then for video cards (and if new ones arrive)

The new version x1900gt by HIS is now $199 at newegg.

I'm in the same delimma as the original poster. Even though the x1900gt seems best to me, I have to wonder how long it will last, how long it will be a reasonably good card-- especially at 1600x1200.

It seems to me:

$150 or less = 7600gt (clear winner--ATI has nothing right now)
$200 range = New Version x1900gt (Nice cooler and looks good)
$250-300 = x1900xt 256mb
$300+ = x1900xt 512mb

That's my take on it, anyway.
