X1900GT Overheating!

I just installed my first ATI card X1900GT on a clean install. I'm not impressed so far, moved from a 6600GT. My system reboots when GPU reaches 75C. I knew at $179 there was a catch!

Should I apply AS5 and try again or just return and get a 7900GT?

Will applying AS5 void my warranty?

Suggestions Welcome!

 
RMA/return is probably the easiest route. Otherwise I'd strongly recommend aftermarket cooling - an Arctic Cooling Accelero X2 for example.
 
Well I'm not surprised that the x1xxx series cards can reach in that temps. Especially my x850xt reaches 76C once without problems. If you're system is not going great with the card, might as well return for an RMA. Don't let this discourage you and I had a similar problem with my 7600GT KO series reaching 82 C max load. My solution was an aftermarket cooling with the zalman VF 900.
 
Seems like there's more than one thing going on in your system. My X1900GT has hit as high as 93C with stock cooling and never even flinched. You can probably drop your temps with an Accelero X2 or a Zalman, I'm looking into getting an Accelero myself, but it seems like you have a bigger problem on your hands than that. Do you have a decent power supply?
 
I have a Seasonic 600.

I noticed in atitool that my fan speed is only 30% at 70C. I'm going to speed it up manually, but shouldn't it automatically be at 50% or more by then?





 
I thought ATItool set the voltages automatically. What should all the voltages be set at? There are a bunch of them.
 
The only ATItool I know that works halfway well with X1900GTs is the one in the Techpowerup forums (in a post by Wizard in the thread about unlocking X1900GTs.) I assume this is the one you have. If you haven't already been fiddling with the voltages in ATItool I'm not sure that this is the time to start. I know Madshrimp's new X1900GT review does mention some volt settings for overclocking. Seasonic's have a great rep so I wouldn't think your power supply is the prob, you do have the power supply hooked up to the rear of the card I assume? ATI made some changes to the fan setup, it's not the same as the X1800XL or GTO even though it looks like it. I believe the fan ramp up speeds were part of the changes. 30% at 70C doesn't sound to far off.

I agree, should not be rebooting at 75C. I would uninstall ati tool, first. reinstall chipset and ati drivers - using drivercleaner. Make sure case has good air flow. Use riva tuner to control fan speed. Than when all is working, get an x2.
 
Yes, the PCIE power is connected.

I didn't make any other changes to my system, except changing the card and doing a clean install. It always ran rock solid with my trusty 6600GT.

My card must have some problem to freeze/lockup at 75C. Others run at 90C and up with no problem.

At this point, it seems no else has a similar problem with the temp that low. I must have gotten a bad card.

Likely you got a bad card. Just seems weird - anyways do try without ati tool as my system did not like ati tool and had some problems though rebooting wasn't one of them.

Looks like you all helped fix the issue. I uninstalled atitools, CCC, and drivers. Used driver cleaner. Then reinstalled all, but CCC. It seems fine now. Weird!

I wonder if CCC was messing it up? I'm not going to take the chance and find out. No more CCC for me.
