Got my shiny new Palit 9600GT this evening. Uninstalled old x1900gt drivers, removed card, installed 9600GT, installed drivers (174.74 x64 edition). Very quiet card once Windows loads the drivers and the fan control starts.

3dMark05
x1900gt - 10250
9600GT - 16368
(60% improvement)

3dMark06
x1900gt - 4947
9600GT - 9907
(100% improvement)

May still be held back slightly by my CPU (e6400 @ 3GHz) but the 9600GT is much faster overall.

Try some overclocking posts some more benchmarks like Crysis on high settings.

I get around 11000 with my overclocked 8800gs on default gpu settings settings and we have a comparable CPU. Try to beat that score.

My system
E6300 @ 3.05ghz on a ASUS P5B vanilla P965 board.

What software do I use to OC my GPU? I have looked at Rivatuner but don't see anything there for overclocking.

And I don't have Crysis, which is why I opted for the 9600GT. The games I play don't need that much muscle or I would have gotten an 8800GTS instead.

Open Rivatuner and under DRIVER SETTINGS click Customize and then the first icon which looks like a graphics card.

Tick Enable overclocking and then click detect now

i have my 9600GT overclocked to

750 core / 1875 Shader / 1000 Mem for everyday use.

the best ive had so far for benchmarking is

780 core / 1950 shader / 1100 mem

but this isnt 100% stable and somtimes crashes in games.

PS Don't bother overclocking your card until you need to do so. If you want to see how high it will go thats fine but run it at default unless the extra power is helping. This card maxes out UT3 easily which is the main game I play right now.

Thanks for the input, guys. I have RT 2.08 but overlooked how to use it for overclocking. Additional benchies to follow tonight.

And to your point, j0j081, that is what I intend at this point--the card is already so much faster than my previous x1900gt that I have no need yet to unlock any additional power. And it's not an EVGA/XFX so why push my luck with overclocking until I need to?

You haven't tried Crysis though. That would eat up a 9600gt alive or any video card for that matter. :p

Updated numbers.

9600GT @
700/2000: 10477
750/2000: 10781

My question is, how do I know if these overclocks are stable/safe to use for general use? Actually, I probably won't leave it overclocked at all, I really don't need any more power than it cranks out at stock settings.

;)

EDIT: And by the way, if I pushed up my cpu a little more I could probably match your 11K. I think 3d06 is overly focused on cpu power (out of proportion with impact on gaming performance).

Yeah 3dmark sway by cpu but it is also testing lower resolution of 1280x1024.

CPU does help long as you have enough fillrate and bandwidth in games. It's just that people seem to want more eye candy so they crank up AA which is limited by memory bandwidth and vram.

That's not bad of 3dmark score though.

I just found this review today. Compares 8800gs 768 vs 9600gt. 9600gt does better AA but it loses without AA. Kind of evens out.

I score slightly better than that with my 8800GS overclocked to 700/1600/2000.

A good program to test if your ocs are both stable and safe is ATITool. Don't be fooled by the name it works for all cards. It looks a little tricky to setup but you don't need to mess with any of the settings really. Just enable your OC in RivaTuner then run the 3D tool. It heats up your card far more than any game will in hardly any time. If you see any artifacts you know your oc is too high so lower it a bit then test again. To find the max oc just keep raising your clocks until you see artifacts.

Thanks for the responses, guys. I have been overclocking cpus for years but really haven't messed with my gpus at all previously (played with an early version of atitool and my 9800pro back in the day but quit when the stock fan died).

So don't use the OC feature in atitool, set the OC with RT and then just confirm stability with atitool?

How do you set a custom fan configuration in RT? I found the place to do it, but when I tried to adjust for high load 3D all it did was jack up my fan speed for all three places (and immediately my fan cranked up and sounded like a Hoover--noisy little ah heck). Maybe I'm missing something again here.

Anyway, like I said before, this card even at stock seems to be plenty for my uses. I mainly play WoW at 1280x960 (8xAA) or 1600x1200 (0xAA - so far, looks good even without AA) and some less strenuous games, nothing new yet. But I have STALKER that I was waiting for the new card to try, so maybe this weekend I will see how it works for a newish game. May have to crank up the speed for that one!

Yeah, gimme a break, I'm not overclocking my PCIe slot (that's only done in the BIOS, I have mine fixed at 100mhz) so I've got no worries from that angle. Most everyone knows that's now how you overclock video cards anyway, even me who's new to GPU overclocking.

Sniper--it looks like your system is gaining lots of benefit from that Q6600. My score is considerably lower even though I have a similarly clocked card and more memory. Gotta be the Q6600 versus my e6400 (which is why I don't particularly like the 3D06, it weights the CPU too much in my mind).

wow, 3dmark 06 is crap. I have 100mhz more on cpu and am on an older chipset with only 2 gigs ram and at those clocks I get more than 1000 marks more than you. Bullshit that you cant disable cpu tests.

Be VERY careful when you go to oc the 9600gt.

You may want to think twice before you have a nice piece of paperweight in your rig.

Dont start this one going again, but who overclocks the PCIe bus anyway?

i score 13130 in 3dmark 06 with my 9600GT @

750/1875/1000 :)

wow do you have link for that score? i want to see rest of the spec.
He's running a quadcore may be why its relatively high.
