x1900 xtx wont enter 3d mode at all

Hi. I'm having annoyingly huge problems. My Powercolor x1900 xtx won't seem to enter 3d mode. I've tried everything. Reinstalling drivers many times, tried it with "ATi hotkey poller" on and off, nothing seems to work. The only way I can get it to enter 3d mode is if I use Ati tool to explicitly set my voltages and clocks to the right speeds, and i don't really want to keep doing that. When I just tried doing it again (after trying out the NGO modified drivers), my whole screen went green and really distorted and i had to restart.

I know my card isn't entering 3d speeds automatically becuase i used systool to monitor the clocks and they were staying at 500/594.

Is my card bad or does this warrant a reinstall of windows? If my card is bad, i can't send it off anywhere because I live in the UK so i'm stuck, as powercolor doesn't seem to have a UK support...

I'm at the end of my tether here.

Uh, here are my specs if you want them:

Intel e6400 Core 2 duo, Asus P5B Deluxe, x1900 xtx, 1GB Corsair RAM, Soundblaster X-fi xtreme music. My PSU is a 580W Hiper Type-R.

I hope I can get some help here!!

Thanks!

When testing 3d mode are you running the 3d app in fullscreen mode, or in regular window? The card will not enter 3d clocks unless it's running in fullscreen mode. Also, I dont know how accurate systool is, try using rivatuner to monitor the card while testing a 3d app. And make sure the Ati services are running.

Did you use DriverCleanerPro in between changing drivers? Did you install the .Net framework and WDM drivers when installing ATI drivers? (and what munky said!)

I'll try what munky said, running in fullscreen mode. Oh, and by the way, i have used drivercleaner pro extensively between changing drivers and i have the .net framework/wdm drivers installed.

Oh by the way, how am i meant to use overdrive in the CCC if all it does is display 2d clocks? It won't let me change them at all.

Hi! I tried entering a game in fullscreen mode and Systool reported the clocks going up! I didn't realise windowed mode games won't cause the card to enter 3d clocks! (Scared me, thought there was something wrong with my card!).

I can't get overdrive to work though! It just reports the 2d clocks within overdrive.

Oh i think I understand. The overdrive panel shows 2d clocks, and when you move the slider, that is the clock that the card will enter when it goes into 3d mode? Is that right?

Sorry for not understanding any of this - this 2d/3d stuff is confusing to me and isn't really described on the ATi website or in any manuals so I don't really understand it well!

Absolutely correct :) . It also confused me at first, but that's the way it goes. Overdrive will show you current clocks, which should always be 2D clocks since you have to be in Windows to actually see the overdrive page (unless you're running dual monitors), while "requested" frequencies are what it does in 3d mode.

ATI doesn't do a good job of documenting these 2d/3d clock modes. In fairness to them, it's better they have it than don't, since it extends the life of the card, but they should have some kind of warning.

Thanks again for the help - greatly appreciated. I must have posted on about three other forums about this problem - I either got no replies or people telling me to RMA the card! I'm glad i came here! :)

munky is right, x1900xt would NOT enter 3d mode UNLESS you game in full screen

just game with full screen with CCC already open on your desktop and exit the game and you should be able to see your clocks are running at full speed

i cant beleive how many people are freaked out about the 2d/3d clocks these days, i never noticed anyone going ntus about that when there were 6800GT/6600GT's were all the rage.

It seems to have started an uprising with X1900 era.

it's probably because of the way nvidia and ati construct their drivers

ati allows its users to easily access to overdrive hence they'd be able to see the 2d/3d clocks in real time

nvidia on the other hand, does not offer that in their drivers....users need 3rd party tools such as rivatuner in order to see it

My personal method is to disable 2D/3D switching, set the 3D clocks, and run them 24/7.

The idea that running the card at the lower 2D clocks will prolong the lifespan seems a bit farfetched to me.
