x1900 xFire

I was considering either buying my friend's x1900 crossfire ed card and running xfire on my rig with my 1950 xt or selling him my card in a few months for his own xfire setup and getting myself a 2nd gen dx10 card from either ati or nvidia. Sounds like a no-lose situation, right? Well, his card won't finish 3dmark 06 at stock clocks. I couldn't figure out a way to underclock it in CCC so I installed ati too. I underclocked it to 550/620 and it worked fine. It doesn't seem to be an overheating issue as I cranked the fan up to 59 % in ati tool and it still failed at stock clocks 1/2 way through Return to Proxycon. I helped him get it from newegg in jan as an open box so I feel responsible to help him get it running right. He only scored 5870 in 3dmark 06 with those pathetic clocks paired with an e6600 at 9x333! This could go down in history as the worst 3dmark 06 score for an x1900 xfire exer! HELP!!!
