x1900 overheating

I have had it for about 6 months and at first it was fine. Fan turned on when it needed to no artifacts etc. Then it started to overheat from the fan not kicking on when it should, so I got ATItool and told the fan to go on 100% when it detected 3d.. It was fine for a while now, when I play a game it doesn't crash, it just starts artifacting after a little while. I turn off the game when it happens to check the temps... gpu 65ish celcius and here is where I think the problem is: voltage regulator 75-76 celcius. Is this the cause of my artifiacting? If so how do I get the temps down? I'm still running ati tool and just took the card out and gave it a good spray down with compressed air. I am running the latest ati drivers.

Just ran 'scan for artifacts' in ati tool, it's been running for about 7 minutes, voltage reg temp: 83c gpu: 74c no artifacts

First clean out any dust from the fan. Second, open the side of the case for a night and see if it stops the overheating. If it does improve ventilation in your case. Also with the side open make sure your fan in not performing intermittently.

All dust (barely any) was removed. No need for the side of the case to be removed there is holes all over it for air intake. I can hear the fan roaring at full speed the entire time.

I have a X1900GT and the oem cooler is a hunk of junk POS, get yourself a real cooler asap from the egg. I did and its no longer sounding like a high pitched vacuum cleaner, and running at 70c in the process, but now at a coll, quiet, 45c, 50c at load, and you cannot even hear it.

I have used this one for years starting on my X850pro, X1800Xt, X1900AIW, and now on my X1900GT. Its a great cooler, and it will take care of your heat issues

I used a RAMSink for the Vreg on my x1950xt that deopped from "burn my finger" to "kinda warm".

When I hit it with a IR thermo now it reads 88F.

I use water on my GPU with a chiller so my temps are 15-22C.

ATI tool is not the most accurate test for atifacts I have found. When below 50c my card artifacts no matter what the clock is. But ingame theres nothing.

How do these two temps relate to each other? Conversion to a single scale please.

So it sounds like the vreg chip is 88F and the GPU is ranging from 59 idle to 71 load with water. Nothing a couple seconds on google couldn't figure out...

And on the original topic.. I'd call the manufacturer and look at an RMA. Sounds like you may have a problem with thermal transfer from the GPU to heatsink which over time may have caused permanent damage to your GPU chip. I'd see about getting it replaced personally, installing an aftermarket cooler may not fix the problem and will probably void your warranty.

I'll call them, but having owned the computer for almost 7-8 months I doubt they will RMA it. I'm gonna send a letter to their support and see what they say.

Actually it says for Asus, to RMA through your supplier, so I guess I'd have to RMA through newegg.

actually now that I think about it, I don't think the card is damaged. It doesn't really artifact until the vreg gets to be around 79-80ish C then some of the shadows get messed up and in fear sometimes the floor tiling stretches more. When the card is warm/idling there are no issues.

Did you at any time remove the cooler or twist it?

I ask because if the thermal interface material gets cracked after it's dried out for 6-8 mo then you will not be able to cool as efficently

Alot...Alot of people think they can also re-use thermal paste.

Mayby the cheapest most hassle-free solution to your problem would be to go pick up a tube of AS5 or Ceramique.

the ATI 19xx series cards can run fine up to about 95C load... above that point and i'd start to worry. if you're artifacting at below that temp, its probably not "overheating"

I used the ATI catalyst drivers from ATIs page. I just downloaded and installed the Asus Catalyst drivers and I am going to see if it gives me different results. Otherwise I may have to try and RMA. I know the GPU can get pretty hot and be ok, I was just more curious about the voltage regulator temp, I didn't know if that could get as hot as the GPU or if it had a lower tolerance for heat causing my artifacts.
