I'm really not sure where spend my money, it's hard to find a comparison of these two similarly priced cards. If someone can point me to some benchmarks of these two, I'd be grateful.

also, how much difference is the memory size going to make? Should I save a few dollars and get a 256MB X1800?

Thanks for the advice.

Are you kiding me? Just about every set of 7900GT benchmarks around include X1800XT scores.

With all due respect a simple search will answer your questions.
That said, i chose the x1800xt 512 and have been very happy with it.

I have both, for 2 different computers. Both are about the same speed but if you are at all interested in running vista at the moment the ati drivers ARE FAR ahead of nvidias drivers currently. I had all kinds of trouble trying to get the 7900gt to work with my HDTV ( works great on xp ) but the drivers are still crap couldnt get it to work right at all even with powerstrip. swaped cards and the ATI works smooth as silk on vista beta 2. Custom resolutions and all.

You guys check out the new FS roundup of all 7900gt's? They threw an x1800xt 512mb in the mix as well, and the 7900gt's murdered it in almost every instance. CRAZY, its almost as FS was leaning towards Nvidia, but i kno thats not true they have some of the best hardware reviews in my book. The x1800xt i guess could be overclocked, as theres was running stock but some of those gaps might not even be closed with the 7900gt taking such a lead. Ive heard the x1800xt does good in shader intensive games, but damn.....it loses in F.E.A.R and oblivion in mountains.....WOW.

linky for those who care- http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/geforce_7900_gt_roundup/

i think they are both roughly equal. 7900GT will do better in certain games, and the X1800XT will do better in other games.

i would stick with the 7900GT...cheaper and they have better drivers, IMO.

i'd take the x1800xt over 7900gt at any given price. the nvidia card just doesn't offer the picture quality in games as ati does in the x1800xt

I'd check legitreviews which are good enough (at least in some/one) of the reviews I've seen on their site to run both cards at identical quality settings rather than nvidias defaulted lower quality

Don't you have AGP slot, with 2.4C?
also, 1800XT is available in 512mb, which makes it a preferable choice especially in 512mb.
for 256mb, x1800xt is cheaper and doesn't get spoilt that commonly(not heard atleast) as 7900GT.

On the other hand such 7900GTs are available that overclock like mad.

umm.. poor reading skills???

the XT is pretty close in everything (murdeded 7900 in oblivion/foilage), except farcry which they tested with 0xaa/0xaf...

Not to mention every single 7900 is highly Oc'd... did you notice the default 7900 is always below the x1800?

Bottom line is - if you want to vmod, dont mind the lack of IQ, and wanna risk with getting a faulty card because many 7900 have this "problem" well go ahead and buy a 7900

cause he has the Albatron PX915P4C ...one of the few socket 478 mobos with a pci-e slot.

It's a 478 mobo with a 915 chipset and a PEG slot. It was nice not to have to upgrade my CPU to be able to upgrade motherboard and graphics. And I do realize that I'll probably be pretty CPU limited for awhile, but only until Conroe comes out...

I'm in the same predicament. I'm working on a step-up for my (eVGA) 7600 GT, going to a 79. Considering selling the 7900 GT sealed and using that money towards an X1800 XT... but I'm not sure whether it's even worth it. As far as I know, Sapphrie doesn't have a lifetime warranty, do they?

I bought a 7900GT, but in retrospect, really wished I'd gone for the 256mb X1800 XT.

Cheaper, faster, better IQ, and don't get me started on the noisy crappy 7900GT fan.

The stock X1800XT fan is terrible too (noisy as hell), but you're definitely right about the rest. The 7900GT is a pointless buy unless you want to volt-mod it, but then it's a complete beast.

Actually the 7900GT fan seems to be about on par with the X1800XT (7900 is louder under idle but quieter under load) so in terms of fan noise it's basically a wash.

Most people don't realize the 7900GT fan is quite loud.
