What do you think would win in performance, one of the factory overclocked 7900GT's (that cost around $350) or an X1800XT?

XFX 7900GT XXX is clocked at amazing 560/1650, that's as fast as 7800GTX 512mb, so for me 7900GT is the way to go.

It's not as fast, it's faster........... (7800GTX only thing I'm worried about going nVidia this round is no HDR + AA.

I was about to post about that XFX card McArra mentioned. It's a smoking deal. For $30 over MSRP (or 10% higher price) you get 22% extra performance. That's unheard of in the videocard industry at the high end. I wouldnt worry so much about HDR+AA for 2 reasons:

1) the only way to get respectable performance with HDR+AA is to get X1800XT (which is slower than this ultra overclocked 7900GT) or an X1900XT which costs $120 more.

2) Even if you get any of the cards that can do HDR+AA chances are performance above 1024x768 will hardly be acceptable.

I think for Oblivion and UT2007 you want a card with lots of power and 7900GT OC certainly delivers above X1800XT for a similar price.

EDIT: Look into XFX - GeForce 7900 GT Extreme not XXX version. It comes clocked at 550 vs. 560 and memory at 1630 vs. 1650. Very minor decreases in speed but you save $20 over XXX version.

i'm trying to figure out the same thing actually. I just ordered that x1800xt for 300 bucks, and am thinking the 7900gt oc'd will be around that price in a month or two when we see some price drops/rebates. I don't think its so clear, and

firingsquad has the x1800xt in their comparison, and its a very close call. I play BF2 and COD2, and the x1800xt will come out on top over an ocd 7900gt. The open GL games obviously go to the 7900gt, but the 512mb on the x1800xt seem to give it the edge in others. I wonder if the 512 will become a bigger factor in future games.

its a really close call, but i guess it comes down to what games you play. it may be better to wait a while to see if some price wars happen.

They're both close enough that you should strictly focus on the games you play and determine what's best for you.

Actually in some games like HL2:Lost Coast\DOD:S you do get HDR + AA.

Although I have yet to see it be anything more than annoying eye candy, with or without AA. Hopefully this will change in upcoming games.

Just purchased the XFX 7900GT "Extreme" (550/1630) from Monarch for $329. Thanks to the above poster for pointing out the extremely small difference between that and the XXX, better to save $20 than eek that extra 0.5 FPS out of it.

Nice card you have bought, and with the price difference you could buy a real cooler like AC Silencer ;)

Perhaps, but I dont think I'll be able to eek any more out of a card that's already clocked 100 MHz higher on the core and 310 MHz (effective) higher on the memory than the stock card.

Actually I was talking to my wife about just that, getting our systems some 7900GTs and running them on passive cooling at stock speeds.

I hope eVGA or XFX or any other company for that matter slap on custom cooling solutions to replace that puny stock HSF. I'd like to see how far the 7900 GT can be pushed with some real cooling - it's already doing an amazing job with a 6600-like cooler.

i don't mean to keep dragging this out, but thought I'd post in case someone searches for the question of 7900GT OC vs x1800xt later on. Very few people care now, but later on it may come up since it's possible that the x1800xt coming down to 7900gt prices.

all of these websites are confusing the hell out of me, because they are giving different results (anand, firing, 3d, hexus). One example is with battlefield 2, where firingsquad has the x1900xt way ahead of the 7900gtx on all resoutions, but anandtech has the 7900GTX out performing the x1900xt. I was trying to gauge the hypothetical performance of an oc'd 7900GT by putting it in line with the 7900GTX 512, but I finally came across a review that put the x1800xt against the overclocked XFX 7900GT XXX. It seems that the overclocked 7900GT might even outperform the 7900GTX 512.

http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,1935812,00.asp

This just confirms the overclocked 7900GT generall outperforming the x1800xt (except cod2). Most of you here already assumed that, but I was getting the impression from other sites that the x1800xt would probably outperform the 7900GT oc'd on most benches when AA was enabled at higher resolutions. It's amazing this overclocked part seems to be as good, if not better, than the 512mb 7800gtx & x1800xt

I guess I'm going to send my x1800xt back to compusa and wait for a good deal on the xfx or evga overclocked 7900gt... but now i'm wondering about this whole shimmering business

personally i would buy a ATI X1800XT because of AVIVO and better IQ

But for sli and all then i would go with 7900GT :)

sli seems to be a tad faster than crossfire at this moment
at least for the one that i cared about (7900 gtx sli)

single gtx was outperformed by xtx in fear
but sli gtx outperformed xtx in crossfire

Too tired for lengthy post-will add some tommorrow but one note- the 1800XT also OC pretty well and you can set voltages in software(easy volt mod). I'm counting on getting mine to at least 750 on the core and 850(1700Mhz) on the memory. Trust Firing Squad's review of being representative and both cards will scale from there with OC'ing.
