X1800XT to X1900XTX on 2405FPW, worth it?

I just got my 2405 FPW this last week and picked up Oblivion this weekend. I was wondering if the extra shaders on the 1900 series is worth it so I can squeeze a bit more performance out of this game. the HDR +AA patch has me hooked on ATI atm 🙂

ANYTHING to X1900XTX is worth it! I can't compare the shaders from one to the other, but I can tell you that the XTX is blazing fast, even on Oblivion with full settings, HDR+4AA, and a host of .ini enhancements. Oh, and it looks good too.

depends on how much value you think there is to get this difference in performance vs how much it will cost you:

Radeon X1900 XTX 31avg fps 39 maxfps
Radeon X1900 XT 29avg fps 35 max fps
Radeon X1800 XT 512MB 27avg fps 35 max fps

in over 90% of current games you won't even notice any difference.

I agree with pops above me, and on top of that I would say that your wallet needs a break from that 2405. Perhaps once the next generation of GPUs come out (and games) you may be forced to upgrade to be able to run at its native res, but for now I'd say deal with merely High settings and not worry about ultra high with all features enabled, because really, your enjoyment of the game will improve a fraction of what it'll cost you.

That being said, however, if you DO get the x1900xtx, you can feel free to hook me up because my 9800 Pro could REALLY use an upgrade (Oblivion on 640x480 on Medium settings is breaking my heart).

Since your LCD is 1920 x 1200, IIRC, then the move is worth it. HOWEVER, switch to an x1900xt for $450. They EASILY OC to XTX speeds. I even went to far as to flash my card to an XTX bios (don't do it unless you know what you're doing). CCC should be suffice to OC, though.

Yeah, its really a matter of performance at high resolutions. I play everything too. From MMO's to FPS. Good info about the 1900XT, I only even looked at the XTX because of the 50 MIR on the XTX from HIS @ Newegg.

Also, I hear that nothing is coming out til fall from any video makers to begin with, another reason I'm looking around at my video situation.

Absolutely. I was in the same position as you. Dell 2405 and x1800xt. The x1900xtx is faster in every game by a decent margin.

liaten to the others above, but consider the oprotunity cost of waiting for the next gen gpus.

think about it, u just shelled a ****** load of money to buy the 24 inch flat panel, one of the best and biggest for its price, and then you buy oblivion, the best game in the world right now.....but you do not have the best video card to make the best game look its best with the best lcd screen.

Unless you have a x1900 or a 7900gtx, that 24 inch fp and oblivion would not give you its best.....that all i am saying.

If u want to wait for the next gen of gpus, u will have to wait that much time to play oblivion the way its meant to be played and for that 24" to look its best.

I would just try Oblivion and other games on that Computer and if you don't like the performance of the X1800XT, then jump up to the X1900XT. If you're happy with the performance, keep the X1800XT. And turn the resolution down too if you can do that to get more performance. For me, 1024*768 and anything above that looks fine to me.

One other point... it's possible to find XTX's for very cheap! You mention the X1900XT for $450... decent price I suppose but a little shopping around netted me an XTX for $441 delivered (to Alaska even). I found that one on ebay. Brand new in box, sealed, ATI brand. Just keep your eyes peeled for deals, suddenly you'll find a price like I did that's too good to pass up!

And if the XT OC's to XTX speeds... then the XTX OC's to ??? speeds! Preliminary testing on my own card has me at 700/850 but I'm still trying to figure out WHEN they kick in because some of my 3D apps aren't triggering the shift from 2D to 3D mode. Fun stuff.
