Bought an X1800XT w/ Zalman cooler off of FS/FT. I put it in, booted up, and got idle temps of 80C :Q Right now it's running 65C thanks to a giant house fan. Talking to the previous owner, he said he idled at 40C.

Current setup:
drivers: catalyst 7.11
Ultra V Series 500W PSU (card is powered by the 6pin PCI-E line coming off of PSU)
C2D E4300 @ 2.44ghz (about to check to make sure the PCI-E lane is async w/ system bus)
2gigs SuperTalent DDR2 667
Asrock 4core dual VSTA motherboard

anyone know what could be causing my problems?

edit: i have a pci slot fan that i think could help, but it sucks air out. can i reverse the polarity of the wires to make it blow air in the case?

fan is indeed spinning and is hooked into the "case fan" pin set on my mobo (the fan's pins don't fit onto the pin set for the stock fan)

yes. i was using ATItool previously, but i thought its temperatures may have been thrown off because there was gpu-controlled fan.

the zalman cu cooler appears to be sucking in air, so its exhaust area is all around the fins.

edit, yeah, i'll try thermal compound.

maybe he lived in an igloo, or had a huge fan in his case. or he is lying...

I don't see the "problem" either.. video cards normally operate at those temperatures... 80 degrees is fine for it.

looks like it needs some thermal grease. radioshack was closed at 645. bastages :| (i lent mine to a friend :()

2d clocks are stable, but 3d clocks will wtf-pwn the gpu, so it looks like i'll be browsing AT till radioshack opens again :D

80C would be WAY too hot for me.

my 1800XL running at XT speeds is at 43c no load, never seen it over 58C with the stock cooler

Did you install the zalman or were the previous owners temps 40C using the zalman?

previous owner's temps were 40c with the zalman (which came with the card)

edit: now that my temps are under control, i'm still crashing  time to try different drivers

That could be an issue, what RPMs does the fan spin at and is it constant or does it change?
