I know, its an old card, whats the point, etc.
But, I'm just goofin around, and its the only card I have until my replacement arrives.

Anyway, I'm running into a wall w/ my memory OC.
By all the reading I've done many have easily gotten 840+ on default volts.
I've read suggestions of even lowering memory voltages.
I've tried increasing, I've tried lowering..I'm still stuck at ~810 no matter which way I go.
I've removed the Core from the equation by leaving it set at 600 (under default speed).

My concern is: Am I power supply limited? I have a 450W OCZ ModStream which has a 26A [max] +12v rail.

Watching voltage regulator current I'm seeing 27 - 30 Amps.
Occasionally I'm getting a full on hard reset/reboot when I go too far w/ the memory.

What do you guys think? Is my PSU causing this wall/bottleneck for me?

Update: I rcvd my GTX 260 today, and in the same system RivaTuner is showing ~83A [max] under full load (FurMark 191). So, apparently the voltage regulator amperage does not necassarily mean that is what the +12v rail is supplying on its own.

And, fwiw, ocing is a hobby for me, its fun, something I enjoy. Weather its brand new, high end gear or something I'm forced to utilize at the time being.

Now, on to ocing the 260. ;)

X1800XT came out on October 5, 2005.

Fragment pipelines: 16
Vertex pipelines: 8
Texture Units: 16
Memory Bandwidth: 48 GB/sec

I know, its an old card, whats the point, etc.

Performance in modern games: 0/100.

Amount of memory overclock required to run modern games: Failure to compute.
Amount of GPU overclock required to run modern games: Failure to compute.

Amount of time wasted trying to overclock a videocard that is worthless for gaming: Hours.

What do you guys think? Is my PSU causing this wall/bottleneck for me?

I've been trying to cross the Atlantic Ocean by rowing my boat. How can I improve my physical endurance and overcome rowing against the wind? Please help.

I've removed the Core from the equation by leaving it set at 600 (under default speed).

By all the reading I've done many have easily gotten 840+ on default volts.

In other news, "many" have gotten below 840+ memory speeds because overclocking is luck of the draw. I mean how can this be? My X1800XT cost me $500 6 years ago and it won't overclock beyond its rated memory speed of 1500 DDR. I mean seriously, that's just lousy - it's slower than the standard DDR3-1600 $35 memory for the CPU. I want my money back.

What do you guys think?

I heard you should get hold of the final version of ATI's Catalyst 5.11 drivers. Those really help.

But, I'm just goofin around, and its the only card I have until my replacement arrives.

Have you considered adding an aftermarket K&N air filter to your X1800XT?

- 1,000 sizes/shapes
- One year limited warranty
- K&N's high flow cotton media provides performance and protection
- Washable and reusable

It really helped with my Radeon 8500 64mb. I was able to max out Crysis 2 at 2560x1600 8AA/16AF.

My concern is: Am I power supply limited? Is my PSU causing this wall/bottleneck for me?

============================================================

On a more serious note. If you had lowered your GPU voltage and your memory won't overclock beyond 810mhz without an additional voltage increase, that means that your memory is completely maxed out. This makes since since the memory on the X1800XT is only rated at 750mhz. Overclocking is not guaranteed.

I feel your pain I just ordered a 5670 to replace my X850XT PE, who knew that 6 years could pass so quickly.

It will be very interesting to see how a $50 card compares to a $200+ (that's a few years old).

I had an X1800XT 256MB from 2006-2007. Maxed BF2 with that baby. Good times.

I still game on a 9700pro, whats the problem? I can still kill zombies, blow up aliens, fly to mars, build a civilization, ect. ect. Fastest card Ive got is a 320MB 8800GTS...doesnt make the games more fun.

Some games might refuse to run on those cards. Less so with an 8800 GTS but the 9700 pro may be getting long in the tooth.

I had a 9800Pro (coupled to a then current X2 3800+) and the system had trouble maintaining smooth framerate in Oblivion as soon as the area filled with just a few enemies. It pushed me to eventually upgrade to a X1950Pro and I was again happy. You must be playing pretty old games if the 9700Pro can still keep up there...

You can still use a handsaw to build an entire house - eschewing power tools completely. Yet no one does it if they have access to power tools.

If the fastest card you have is a 8800-GTS 320M, you're right - new games are no fun on old hardware.
--The problem is that you are *restricted* to old games on very low settings.

You can still watch movies on a small B&W TV; but not even the 3rd world's poorest people do it if they can afford better.

Only way I can think to describe what you just said is that its the evil of this world and the downfall of man. You are at the very least a vain materialistic person, and can't even understand the gravity of what you just said.

A message for everyone here:

Next time you try showing off to a poor person, trying to prove how much better you are by how much more money you have to spend...stop and think about what your doing.

Instead of that 3000$ 80" TV how about something more modest, instead of laughing at the people with a "small B&W TV". Instead of those 100$ jeans, how about 4 pairs of 25$ ones...give the others to people who have none.

I can enjoy my life BECAUSE I don't have the best of everything.

Who is laughing? i am stating the facts and the way the world works.

There is no "showing off" involved. In fact, you are touting a 9700Pro on a public forum as though it is still a gaming card. It is not. The gaming experience with that card for modern games is awful and if you cannot tell the difference between it and a more modern card, the fault is not mine for pointing it out.

"I am stating the facts and the way the world works."

Thats the problem.

Like you can't enjoy any TV if it isn't the most expensive model, like you can't enjoy any game made before 2006, like you can't enjoy a moderate used car...ect.

And the fact is, I CAN play any modern game...and like I said, it doesnt make them any more or less enjoyable. If its got a good story and/or is fun to play it doesnt matter how pretty it looks.

i doubt it. i'd say a 9700p cannot play quite a few modern PC games even on the lowest settings.

And you are dead wrong. Graphics *enhance* a game and add to immersion.

You seem to enjoy setting up your own strawman arguments and then burning them down.

There is quite a difference between not having the "most expensive" and playing with antiquated HW. :p

sorry but that is a load because there are plenty of games you cannot play with a 9700pro. you could get by with that 8800gts 320mb for all games but even that card would struggle in some titles on anything much above low settings and res. and so I guess your next claim is that you have a single core cpu that handles all modern games just fine too.

for some perspective on just how silly his claim is, a 9700 pro is slower than a 6600gt. a 6600gt does not even meet the minimum requirements to play most newer games. even my pitiful 8600gt would be four times faster than a 9700 pro.

I never said I played everything on the 9700pro, but it was said that such a card can not game at all. Same with an X1800XT. That is massively wrong. I have HUNDREDS of games it can play. Because its obviously all garbage to you guys it didnt cost me much of anything for it all either.

I can play crysis on my 8800 at 16x12 medium settings and frame rates but I havn't been interested in playing it yet. I didnt pay more than 5$ for the game (I got Civ 5 for like 10$ and am playing that right now). I could upgrade now, but theres nothing I cant run...so I will wait. Eventually Ill build another last gen top of the line computer for 500$ and be able to play everything maxed again. Graphics havnt been advancing at all...so its actually getting easier and easier to play "modern" games.

Ive got nothing against progress, I just think EVERYONE should have access to it. 40% of my income goes to help others. I drive an old reliable car, play on an old computer, I don't pay for cable and I have a small TV. By living an average life I am making sure that somebody else can do the same, somebody who otherwise would have nothing. If people werent so greedy they could all do the same...so the entire world could enjoy the advances we have made.

But no, you CAN'T possibly tolerate a moderate life, so nobody else could either. Better to keep those poor people blind deaf and dying.

i call BS. You did post you can play ANY modern game. No one told you the card couldn't game - that is your own strawman.

Please get your story straight before you set yourself as an example of how everyone else the planet should live. By living what you call an "average life", you are not necessarily doing anything special for anyone else because you eschew a large TV and play on old HW. My own TV is 24", i don't have cable and i drive an older small car that gets great gas mileage and i work from home; so what?

You are the one who said a 9700pro could not play games. If I recall corectly Half Life was a game...a damn good one too. And guess what? A 9700Pro can run it, very well. Along with many other good games.

I play on old hardware because it works. I can then use the money I would have otherwise spent on frivolous new hardware to help somebody else.

However this isnt the place to argue about it...so I wont make any more posts in this thread.

the talk from the very beginning has been about MODERN games. you said you could play any modern game on that 9700 pro and that is not true at all.

NO i did NOT :p

Here is what i actually said in response to your wild claim that you can play any modern game with it,

And what better place to discuss it than in a thread about overclocking an older card.

Well you probably hit a nerve by the post you made. Accidentally of course.

The truth is that almost everyone lives to their income. You earn more money, you will spend more money. EliteRetard obviously has a different view on life and what makes him happy which clearly is admirable.

However, he should also understand as well (since this is the view held by most people) thus should have thicker skin by now.
