I'm pretty sure I have isolated this to an issue with the video card overheating when I play different games. PC reboots and I get the BSOD w/ Machine_check_exception error. I also got it to reboot when using the Overdrive function of ATI Catalyst.

Right now it is at 75C when running rthdribl_1_2 with 594mhz current vpu clock and 693mhz current mem clock.

I really would rather not replace the cooler on the card as I don't think I should have to but after some hard searching I can't really see if anyone else is having these problems with this card.

Thanks for all your help!

Old post I couldnt update:

Running it right now. 20 min in so far and no errors yet.

It is running at 90C right now though :-(

Case door is open too. I will report back when completed

594/693 are default 2D speeds. Are you also at default 2D voltage of 1.30V?

If your card switches up to 3D speeds & 3D voltage of 1.40V in games, then it may be overheating beyond that shown by rthdribl_1_2. Try using ATi Tray Tools for fan control and artifact testing.

No errors after running all nite. Just replied to the ATI rep as they finally got back to me this morning. I hope to have them tell me I can RMA this damn thing as I hope this isn't normal.

Thanks and I will report back.

If they replace it with the same model card with the same cooler I would suspect you will have the same problems.

how hot is the room you are in? my computer room routinely gets to 85F but the card is usually ~55-60C @ idle and then jumps up to 75-80C under full load, but never seems to go beyond that. can you hear the fan speed increase?

i would look at aftermarket coolers, they did wonders for my x1900xt's, both of them:)

If it passes the artifact test for that amount of time the card is most likely fine.

Agreed. My X1900XT got to 90C or a little beyond all the time and that is normal. The throttle temp for these things is like 105C or something crazy like that :Q

Maybe the drivers are just out of whack, what version are you using? Try updating the drivers. Also maybe it is your CPU that is overheating, not the GPU. Could be a RAM issue too.

have you opened up your case to see how much dust etc has built up? those tiny fans on the video card can get clogged up by all kind of stuff.

Using ATI Tool and rthdribl_1_2 I am running 621core/747mem.
After taking the card out and cleaning dust and checking everything out the thing is running rthdribl with the case side door closed at 79C(62 if I crank the fan to 100% but I really don't want to leave it at that.

I tried running FEAR again and crash.

Artifact tested and no errors reported.

As Pale says below I don't want to hit the same problem with the other dang card they send me if I don't have to.

Is this normal for these cards? Does everyone that actually use them for gaming have to replace the cooler?

My room is 68F right now and not even a bit humid yet.

I'm running PRIME95 and other tests after that to prove it's not the cpu or ram.

Which tests are the best to verify?

memtest86 for RAM (burn the ISO to the CD, and boot from it), Orthos/prime for the CPU. Run coretemp at the same time as prime and log the temps. Copy the logfile contents into excel and you can make a chart from it to get an idea of what the temps are doing.

maybe a psu? since when gaming you are pushing ram/cpu and gpu hard the psu is having issue?

i live in phx, az, my computer room gets to 85F sometimes and the machine is bulletproof. i am running i think a antec 835 w/ 5x80mm fans, a 92mm zalman cpu setup and the 120mm fan inside the antec psu, and the stock gpu hsf combo - no issues at all.
