Apparently some time around mid-day Friday, ATI came to realize that a customs snag involving its shipment of Radeon X1800 CrossFire dongle cables would prevent the new CrossFire cards from making it to online vendors in time for the launch. Not wanting to end up facing availability problems yet again, the folks at ATI decided to push back the product launch date indefinitely until the issue could be resolved.

That seems like a pretty tight timeline... Only knowing on Friday afternoon that cables needed wouldn't be there for in store availability on Monday...

Seems like it was Techreport, and not ATi who paper launched.. shoulda checked their email.

In any event, wont be long, and customs do suck.

ATI didnt paper launch it....tech report did lol

you cant really point the finger here, ATI obviously intended the cards to be out on launch and were seemingly well on their way with it. a snag at customs can happen to anyone, shame it happened to ATI.

so then TR published their report on the crossfire cards effectively paper launching the product by them selves. just a bit of communication break down. cant really shout at anyone

its actually quite funny, becuase TR hate paper launches.....and they just did one!

I would think it would take board makers a few weeks to pack the dongles in the boxes and ship them off to stores.

This is CLEARLY another example of ATI bungling that you can expect to extend to the product quality....

;)

Actually it's just weird, it makes ATI sound like a couple guys running a small company out of their garage-

"Earl! You numbnuts! We need to ship 3000 widgets with those gizmos! What're you thinking!?!?!"

Hopefully resolved soon, the product looks good other than the fall back tiling mode working like ass according to the techreport.

It is possible that the initial round of Xfire cards will only be BBA, but it still seems a little tight. ...That is unless they have an extremely small quantity of the cards to ship. Then again, I'm not in the shipping, packing, and receiving business, so maybe someone with more expertise on this than me can offer more insight. It just seems kinda tight to me.

Customs are very picky these days. Even attempting to put blame on ATi for this, makes you look like a fool.

I think you can take whatever conclusion you want to take from it, and we all know where you stand on most thing ATI.

To me it sounds like ATI was actually on the ball on this issue: they were set to release the product, found out on a Friday that the dongles were caught up in Customs and wouldn't make the launch on time, immediately postponed the launch and didn't paper launch the card on the following monday.

If anything it sounds like a step in the right direction; they didn't paper launch early and then miss another deadline.

They should just send someguy across the boarder with his dongles and then overnite them to various places that need them. Why were'nt dongles packaged with the X-fire master cards in the first place?

Well, the cards and the dongles might be manufactured in two completely different places. That's not uncommon for various parts to come from all over the world.

If it's from Canada, they could pack it in marijuana and ship it to British Columbia. It would then end up across the border with in a few hours, no need for customs. :p

LOL- Crossfire hardware is so bizarre, customs thinks it might be a terrorist weapon.

I can see some poor schmucks looking over their dongles- "Do you think it's part of a device JoeBob?" "Dunno Cletus! I've never seen anything like it!"

Customs Agent: Damn I have not seen a box of dongles since 5 1/4 floppy disks!

In Russia, they'll probably sell these as a Voodoo 2 SLI dongle upgrade!

"Bring your cutting edge Voodoo 2 SLI to peak performance with ATIs new ultra-dongle!"
