X1800XT and high resolutions

So I'm looking at upgrading my display. What I currently have tops out at 1280x1024. I'm looking at going to widescreen LCDs, and am tossing around the pros and cons of 20" compared to 19". 20" displays are at 1680x1050 and 19" displays are 1440x900. What I'm wondering is, would my Radeon X1800XT have enough horsepower to run at those resolutions with HDR and AA? Do you think a 20" would be pushing it and I should get a 19"?

What I currently play a lot of:
(all of these play fine at 1280x1024 with 4xAA and HDR where applicable)
Oblivion
HalfLife 2: Episode one
CounterStrike:Source
Civilization 4

I know I'm not too much of a frame-rate hog, FPS w/ ~45FPS is good enough to my eye.

Also, I'm planning on upgrading my aging PowerMac G4 to a MacPro with a Radeon X1900XT and boot-camping it and selling my PC, so what do you think about an X1900XT in these situations?

Thanks in advance.

X1800 XT is a high end card, it could handle it no problem. It may not be the latest generation, but it is a great card.

By todays standards, the X1800XT, while not a weak card, is nowhere near high end. It can definitely be used at that res with reduced settings in some games of course.

Take a look here . There is no hope in hell that you could run oblivion at 45fps with HDR+AA at 1680x1050 with an X1800XT. An X1950XTX gets 27fps and a X1950pro gets 19 (both at 1600x1200).

Old article, and driver improvements will have been had if you search for more recent articles. But driver improvements won't help THAT much.

Depends on the game. Those 3 games you mentioned, with the exception of Oblivion, should run well, as long as you don't go overboard with AA in HL2 and CS:S.

Oblivion is a different story. It will be pretty choppy outdoors, unless you are willing to part with HDR and distant lands.

I have the same card, while it will play everything at 1440 x 900 nicely with bells and whistles (I know it won't be native resolution but it looks good enough on my 22"), 1680 x 1050 is a little more of a challenge but not a problem if you are willing to turn a couple of settings down in only very demanding games like Oblivion (HDR or AA, not both) /Rainbow Six - Vegas/Test Drive Unlimited (No AA, HDR)

EDIT: By the ways, I run it at 709/1530, which helps a decent bit, as I get 10045 3DMarks05, with my config below. Had the card since 05-2006, it has been a great buy for $300 back then. It would last you until the refresh of G80 & R600 come out, if you manage to hold off until then, I know I'm having troubles doing that ;)

I'm running an X1800XL flashed to an XT and it's been a fantastic card for the last year or so I've had it. I run at 1680x1050 as well and my system handles it just fine. Just don't expect the highest levels of AF and AA when you're playing. For instance, with Oblivion I run 4xAF and 2xAA and I think it looks great. Usually 20-30 fps outside like that.

Everything will run great except Oblivion. I had a similar setup to yours and ran it at 1440 X 900 and there is no way I could have run HDR + 4XAA. One or the other. I always ran it with HDR and never felt a need for AA at all. You may not be able to max it all out but pretty close.

My 8800GTS 320 can't even max it all out when paired with a E6600 at 1680 X 1050. That probably has more to do with the 320MB memory than the GPU though.

I have a X1950Pro 512mb which is about equal to the X1800XT in performance. i'm also using a 22` display at that res. I would say u won't have any problems except for what the above posters mentioned. most games I play native res and some AA and Aniso and get solid fps. Certain games like Fear and Stalker I can still play native res but I need to turn off AA.

As for the previous post about the X800XL, I had a X800XTPE previously and bought the 22 Display and at the native res I had to turn too many settings off to keep a decent FPS. even native res and high detail in CS S caused me to Turn off AA and CS is ugly without it. So that wouldn't do and I went out and upgrade to the X1950Pro which solved the issue.

I would have gotten to a faster card than the Pro but I'm still on AGP!

and I know playable Settings is objective and depends on the person.

I'm usually playing on the Toronto Darkly CS S server which is a 32 man server and with the XTPE at native it was slowing down alot in the thick of battle so it had to go!

With the X1950Pro i'm now able to play 1680x1050 2x AA 4X AF everything on Full including HDR and no problems at all.

Had to use 1680x1050 no AA no AF and HDR off to keep it playable on the X800XTPE

YMMV
